Morales endures nightmare Ingolstadt debut in loss to Erzgebirge

Alfredo Morales Ingolstadt (Kicker)

By FRANCO PANIZO

This was not how Alfredo Morales was supposed to begin his time with FC Ingolstadt.

Morales endured a nightmare Ingolstadt debut in the club’s 2. Bundesliga opener on Friday, getting sent off late and being directly responsible for the pair of goals his team conceded in a 2-1 home defeat to FC Erzgebirge Aue.

The 23-year-old Morales, who started the match as a defensive midfielder, first hit an ill-advised backpass that led to Erzgebirge’s opener in the 25th minute. Things then went from bad to worse in the 81st minute, as Morales conceded a penalty kick and was given a straight red card against an Erzgebirge team that had been reduced to 10 men in the 44th minute. The spot kick was converted.

The German-Peruvian-American will now have to sit out next Friday’s match against Kaiserslautern. The next time he will be available for selection in a league game will be on Aug. 10, when Ingolstadt host Karlsruhe.

Shocked by Morales’ nightmare debut? Do you see him bouncing back from this? Expecting him to return to the starting lineup vs. Karlsruhe?

  1. It’s a shame this happened in his league debut. Luckily it’s a long season and he’ll have time to make up for it. Surely a single (really) bad match isn’t enough to undo a whole preseason’s worth of good showings. Let’s hope it’s his last one for a long while, though.

  2. interesting, just yesterday i read about how he had been playing well:

“Borussia Mönchengladbach were 1-0 friendly victims on Saturday at Ingolstadt, where summer catch Alfredo Morales appears to have nailed down a starting role with the second-division club.

In the victory, the US handyman took up the right defensive midfielder slot in Ingolstadt’s 3-5-2 set. Not simply content to shut down the Bundesliga side, Morales could have notched two @ssists with better finishing from teammates.”

    • from reading about the game, he did play very well and was the architect of many goal scoring passes to the forwards that they didn’t convert. Yes, he did pass back to the goalie that wasn’t hard enough and the opponent forward caught up to it. In the send of, a teammate was in bounding the ball back to the goalie from the touch line and an opponent forward made a play for it, Morales intercepted him and did too much hand grabbing, which caused the ref to give him a red card because he was the last man.
