Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis said ahead of the 4-3 defeat to the New York Red Bulls that he wasn’t sure how fit his star forward Alvaro Saborio would be coming back from international duty. Turns out Saborio was clicking on all cylinders.

Scoring all of his team’s goals, Saborio finished off his hat-trick in stunning style, with a toe poke towards the upper 90 from just inside the box.  The Costa Rican’s performance earned him the honor of SBI MLS Player of the Week.

Saborio beat out Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty, Toronto FC’s Bobby Convey, and Chicago Fire forward Mike Magee for this week’s award.

What did you think of Saborio’s performance? Which player stood out to you in MLS Week 22?

  1. He had a mediocre Gold Cup and one of those three goals vs. Red Bulls was a (questionable) PK. Also, his team ended up losing the match. Player of the week? Uh…

      • Yes, they were all pretty questionable. The worst call though was that Alvarez didn’t get tossed for the early studs-up challenge to Cahill’s leg.

      • Thought all pk’s were fair except the Mansally, so called, takedown at top of box!
With that said, thought it was one heck of a match!

    • SBIs player of the week in MLS has nothing to do with gold cup. He scored two great goals and another on a penalty he didn’t draw so I think it’s deserved.

  2. One thing is for sure: the old criticism that RSL plays a boring style of soccer isn’t true this year. There are goals everywhere for RSL this year. Can’t wait to he the whole team back together.

  3. He makes so much out of so little. Amazing third goal. But alas RSL has very few real defenders right now and Kreis went on an attack binge against NYRB.
