After spending much of the past year in Sweden, Alejandro Bedoya has apparently found a new club to call home and it is in the Netherlands.

According to a Swedish report, Bedoya is set to join Eredivisie club FC Twente after having recently seen his contract with Allsvenskan outfit Helsingborg IF expire. Bedoya has reportedly agreed to terms with the Twente but has yet to sign the deal that would make the move to the Dutch club official.

The 26-year-old midfielder also reportedly received interest from SC Heerenveen but ultimately chose Twente, who finished in sixth place last season and are no strangers to Americans after having had Oguchi Onyewu on loan during the latter half of the 2010-11 campaign.

Bedoya demonstrated excellent form during the final few months of a near year-long stay with Helsingborg, scoring seven goals across all competitions since March. In total, Bedoya netted 10 times during a stint with Helsingborg that began with an initial five-month contract last summer after he departed financially-troubled Rangers.

Bedoya is currently with the U.S. Men’s National Team preparing for a friendly against Guatemala on Friday before kicking off the Americans’ 2013 Gold Cup campaign with Belize next Tuesday.

What do you think of Bedoya signing with FC Twente? Like the move? Wishing he would have signed in a different league?

  1. I know the Premier League has more allure and better pay but I wish more Americans went to Holland first. In comparison to Denmark and Sweden, it has served as a better springboard into the Big 5 leagues (see, e.g., Rolfe, Goodson, Pearce, who never made a succesful the jump from the others; we’ll see about Parkhurst) and our kids actually get to play. Seems like a no brainer but maybe I’m missing something.

  2. Love this move. Although Bedoya is pretty good technically I thinks it’s great for US

players to go learn in holland. US players are generally less technical than the rest of the world and Holland is not a hack a man league. It’s also easier to get playing time. I thought Bradley was terrible technical wise before he went and the same with Jozy and Beasley.Wish GATT and Gyau can find their way there I also think things might have been different for Adu had he gone there and Rogers if he could have hacked it and stuck it out

  3. Always liked bedoya. I remember being impressed by his first couple of caps for the USMNT. Excited to see him get a consecutive good club season under his belt. I thought the Rangers deal was always an odd move for him. Aside from the obvious financial trouble. The Scottish league is just brutal.

I really hope he has a great gold cup. He is a dynamic player and can play on the wings, center, or even up front – if needed. The way JK operates, he could be a great asset. Going into WC – great sub option or, at best, push for a starting spot. As always, just needs consistency.

Good move here! Hopefully it gets finalized.

  4. Excited for Bedoya. His focus and form despite the entire Rangers situation speaks well of him as a professional. I think he’s a good dark horse for the WC Roster and a potential solution to our width problems.

    • He wasn’t good enough to make this kind of move three years ago. Maybe you mean two years ago when he instead went to Rangers? In that case I agree.

  5. Awesome! Surprised they would take a 26 year old. In the past, only the youngest and most talented Americans would be considered for a Dutch transfer.

  6. Alright now lets get Terrence to go replace jozy at AZ and polish him up. I love that Americans are starting to go to holland on a regular basis

      • Consider this — Johannsson turned down a chance to be called up for Iceland last month for WCQ and announced he wants to visit a US camp before deciding his NT future. It’s quite possible we will see him for the Bosnia friendly.

If he’s planning on joining Iceland, he is really going the long (and perhaps “dangerous”) way about it.

      • Iceland has a lot of really good players for their size, but if Johannsson continues to succeed, I doubt they’d let a single US camp stop them from calling him up in the future.

      • Iceland sits in 3rd in their group for WC qualifiers.

Its not looking good for them anymore. Fifa Euro Cup rules change to 24 teams

      • Johannsson has to make a choice between representing his home country (Iceland) or going to the World Cup (USA). It’s not an easy choice and it’s tough to begrudge him if he went with Iceland.

  7. Absolute good situation for Bedoya. Smart move as well. No matter how people like to stereotype the Dutch league they still produce a very attack minded league and the Dutch national teams can steam roll. Look at Jozy Altidore. Look at Michael Bradley. John O’Brien. Dutch teams can take an american player and polish the edges in a year or two to produce a very good player.

    • Good points. And don’t forget DeMarcus Beasley who went with PSV as far as the Champions League(although I think it was called something else then) semifinals about 10 years ago.

      • 8 years ago and it was Champions League back then, too. Europa league is the one which got a makeover.
