SBI MLS Rookie of the Week

SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Dillon Powers

DillonPowers2-LAGalaxy (USATodaySports)

With the Los Angeles Galaxy in town, most casual observers wouldn’t have expected the host Colorado Rapids to come away with a victory.

Instead, the hosts comfortably ran out as winners, thanks to Rapids rookie Dillon Powers. Powers scored one goal and assisted on another in the Rapids 2-0 win vs. the Galaxy, a performance that earned him SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors. It’s the fifth time this season that Powers has received this honor.

Powers beat out Rapids teammate Shane O’Neill, the Montreal Impact’s Blake Smith, and Columbus Crew midfielder Will Trapp.

What did you think of Powers’ performance? Which MLS Rookie stood out to you in Week 22?

Thanks to my hectic schedule and a lack of MLS programming I haven’t even seen Powers play this year. Is he as good as he sounds, or does he just show up for one or two big moments a game? Can he track back on defense? Is he a potential future USMNT player or just a Wondo type who has figured out MLS?

Watching him every week, he is as good as he sounds. He easily has earned a starting spot and holds down a critical position for the team. I am not sure the team would be nearly as strong without him.

Once again, no votes from SBI for TFC’s Jonathan Osorio, despite the game-tying goal (his fourth) and a dominant midfield performance. Why am I guessing this site doesn’t get much Toronto traffic anymore?

Powers has four goals and four assists. His goal this week was pretty impressive, drove through the defenders and shot from just inside the box.
Toronto players are going to have to do something pretty special to get noticed as bad as their team has been this year, that’s just the way it is.

But then you have honorable consideration for Will Trap which lost to Toronto. So what’s up with that?

In comparison to Osorio, Trapp didn’t look like much of a standout to me.

People can’t accept their biases even when they’re smacked in the face with them. The joys of the neuroplastic human brain.

      • jloome

No he didn’t. He’s a rookie. This is his first season.

Or, as mlssoccer.com, the official site of the league referred to him this morning “rookie of the year candidate”.

Shane O’Neill isn’t a rookie either, so I have no idea why he keeps getting mentioned.
