  1. Landon is def back in WCQ squad and everyone is talking about where he fits b/c of Dempsey, why not a 4-3-2-1?

Surely Zusi has what it takes to be a creative CM

  2. Shea had a pretty good game. It’s amazing the difference a goal makes. He looks so much more composed on the ball and those crosses were much more accurate. Good for him. I think he has the potential of being a Garret Bale-lite. he has the physical tools.

  3. Can some MLS team please sign Zelaya? Kid looked nasty, and El Salvador doesn’t pay much. I’d like to see more of him.

    • Totally agree. Aside from Donovan, he was the most dangerous player on the pitch. I really liked him. And, that PK was soooo cheeky. Kid has a future.

      • It was a well taken PK, but I hate seeing overly British descriptions of things. What was “cheeky” about it.

Zelaya saw Rimando going to the right (keeper’s left) and he blasted it down the middle with a curve to the left (keeper’s right). Good decision & shot, but I don’t see what makes it “cheeky.”

      • “Blasted” it down the middle? Really? It was a soft chip down the middle. As much finesse as you could ask for.

And, to answer your question… what is cheeky about it is that he is assuming that the goalkeeper will guess. Not all keepers do. And, if they don’t. That ball is floating right into Rimando’s arms and Zelaya looks like a cocky pr*ck.

But, alas, it was a fine penalty. Kudos for him for the confidence.

    • Surely he and Ariel Martinez from Cuba will be on some radars… Martinez might have some difficulty getting a shot in the US, though.

    • LA needs to grab Zelaya. Dynamo attempted to sign him yrs ago but they tried to low ball the kid and so he went to Russia. AEG loves LA more though.

  4. I’ve said this on another thread, but this shows that Wondo simply isn’t cl@ss enough to score against marginally decent teams. He lacks the speed, strength, and skill to be a threat. I would rather have another midfielder going to Brazil instead of him.

    • HoboMike – Brazil is a Loooong ways away. There are going to be a number of players who are going to be fighting it out for that last spot on the squad…and strikers who are 1 dimensional (like Wando) are going to be on the outside looking in…unless they’re starters.
Hybrid players (who are versitile) will be the ones filling out the depth chart of the US Team. Midfield/Strikers like Dempsey & Donovan will be listed as forwards….While Midfield/Defenders like Cameron & Johnson will be listed as defenders.
IMO this is one of the area’s where the current USNT has improved the most. The players are more versitile than ever before…skill level between 1st & 2nd string is narrower as well….allowing the coaches to have multiple options and be less predictable.

  5. Is it just me, or is Fox’s HD feed for soccer absolutely atrocious?

Also, anyone else notice how Brian Straus parlayed that ridiculous Sporting News article into a job at Sports Illustrated? Cheeky.

  6. Watched on a different channel, sooo glad I didn’t have to listen to Wynalda all game. But even watching a few minutes of highlights is annoying.

  7. Yes this was El Salvador but man we looked good, so many shots so many well created opportunities. Hope we can keep this momentum going into the later rounds.

Also shout out to Gus Johnson shout outs. I like his enthusiasm.

    • Yes, this was El Salvador. They looked liked microwaved butter in a hot frying pan (and the USA was the world’s largest butter knife). Gimme this performance against a top ten team and we’ll talk amigos.
