Second-half goals spur Rapids comeback vs. Revolution

USP MLS: NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION AT COLORADO RAPIDS S SOC USA CO

By DAN KARELL

For the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night, persistence paid off.

Taking advantage of their large amount of possession and a number of chances, the Rapids scored two goals in five minutes to defeat the New England Revolution, 2-1, at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. The victory was the first in comeback fashion in the 2013 season for the “never say die” Rapids.

Despite losing the possession battle for most of the night, the visiting Revolution scored on the first real goal-scoring opportunity they had. Revolution midfielder Juan Toja sliced in a low free kick in the 15th minute that froze Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin in his place, watching it go past him for a goal.

The Rapids refused to accept the scoreline, and though forward Deshorn Brown misses two attempts late in the first half, Nick LaBrocca took his 62nd minute strike with aplomb, firing a low left-footed shot beyond the reach of Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

Midfielder Dillon Powers, who set up the LaBrocca’s game-tying goal, was again the genesis of the Rapids second goal of the game just five minutes later, crossing a ball in near the touchline on the right side of the field that deflected off Revolution Jose Goncalves for an own goal.

Shuttleworth kept the Revolution within distance with a terrific one-on-one save with Brown in the clear, but the Revolution attack lacked it’s usual bite, as the Rapids backline held strong in the final minutes to earn the three points.
