TFC and Red Bulls struggle to finish chances in scoreless draw

On a hot and humid day in Toronto, finishing ability wasn’t the only thing not in attendance at BMO Field.

A short-handed Toronto FC, playing without their two best forwards Robert Earnshaw and Danny Koevermans, failed to finish a handful of chances inside the box, though the visiting New York Red Bulls didn’t play well in the midfield and attacking third either.

Both sides struggled throughout to establish a rhythm, and the two settled for a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon. The result comes just seven days after the Red Bulls put a beat down on the Montreal Impact, who were in first place at the time.

TFC took advantage of numerous turnovers in the midfield and defensive third by the Red Bulls, but the strike duo of Justin Braun and Jeremy Brockie failed to take advantage. Jamison Olave bailed the visitors out in a number of situations, stopping shots from TFC’s Doneil Henry and a close range chance from Jonathan Osorio.

Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles made arguably the play of the game, when he made an acrobatic mid-air save on a Richard Eckersley shot in the 73rd minute.

Here are the match highlights:

  1. The Red Bulls will never be consistent because Alexander and Steele are average wingers, Dax McCarty is a poor offensive player, Tim Cahill is not playing in the area enough, they have no possession/creative players running the midfield, and the one player they did have who could play that role left because their manager didn’t want to play him there. There is enough talent there for them to win and tie more than they lose, but the Colorado-Montreal-Toronto games are exactly the inconsistent and frustrating results that you should expect from this team unless they make some changes or additions.

  2. Completely inept on both sides of the field. At least Toronto FC has an excuse. Did the Red Bulls ever manage a shot on goal in the 2nd half? Totally different team then the one that destroyed Montreal a week ago. What’s up with that?

  3. We’re devoid of ideas and creativity in the midfield. We lack someone who can generate futbol, lead an attack and find passing lanes to the forward line. We had Juninho, but the futbol genius we have as coach, couldn’t find a spot for him and utilize him optimally. Yes, 39 year, old man Juninho the only one who could consistently thread a through ball in the attack. He has more footballing smarts in his pinky than coach Petke has in his entire 6 ft. frame.

  4. Baffling. They win 4-0 against arguably the best team in MLS last week and tie today against the worst team in the league. Something is wrong.

  5. You said it. It shouldn’t be real hard to put together a team with their $$$, NYC, Red Bull Arena and their new practice facility. Pity.
