With newly acquired head coach Preki in tow, the Sacramento soccer project has swung into full gear.
On Thursday evening following a match between the Sacramento All-Stars and the San Jose Earthquakes reserves, Sacramento Republic FC was unveiled, showing off the new name and crest for a team entering USL Pro next season.
The crest features a star in the middle of a badge logo, which according to the club symbolizes the city’s stature as capital of California. The logo also features a bear on it, which is the official California state animal.
Republic FC will begin next season as just one of four teams west of the Mississippi River in USL Pro, along with fellow expansion side Oklahoma City FC, Phoenix FC, and the Los Angeles Blues.
What do you think of this news? Do you believe Sacramento can support a soccer team? Do you see the Earthquakes forming a partnership with the club next season?
Share your thoughts below.
I think Sacramento has been waiting for prof soccer years now. They will be ready to cheer for the Sacramento Republic Soccer Team on opening day. Is it possilbe keep my email here for future team posts, games, etc.
Thanks
Vickie,
So their colors are brown and red?
Glad to see another California team, the amount of prospects and quality players that dont get signed out of CA is something that the US system must capitalize on. Good name and logo too
Good point. All the more reason to get Austin back in USL Pro.
Oklahoma City hasn’t named the team yet. There is an OKC FC but they are the PDL team owned by the potential future NASL team …
And, by the way, how cool is Sacramento’s nickname….
Urbs Indomnita – “The Indomitable City”
Only issue within the logo is “ursus” is Latin for “bear.” I thought they were telling me this was an “indomitable bear” at first glance.
As did I.
Love Preki!
Like the name and design but not the color. Looks like what you would get if the Queens Park Rangers dropped the “Queens” from their name just went with the Park Rangers.
Lovely Nor Cal vibe…maybe they can base their reserve team in Weed. Hope the Quakes form a partnership before Portland gets to them…there’s gold in them there hills…tons of Mexican-American talent in the area…
Does anybody else think MLS will stop at 26 or 28 teams by 2026 (or even before), just when USA hopefully gets the world cup.
With 26 or 28 teams, having an even number in each conference would be perfect and the country is huge, so I dont see a problem.
As always – total nonsense.
care to elaborate as to why his comment was “total nonsense”?
What’s total nonsense?
I think MLS will expand to a point where they create two massive conferences. Where teams play aginst eachother more locallyinstead of traveling all over the US.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see MLS expand to 30 teams.
I don’t think MLS caps, period…unless they want to cede the markets they aren’t in to the NASL, whereupon instead of a second-tier league the NASL becomes MLS’ direct competitor.
There are practical limits. 30-32 is where most of the major North American leagues have drawn the line.
Unless they want to start their own 2nd division…
no
they need to stop at 20 then prepare for promotion relegation
no one will watch the MLS if they continue to act like a rogue league.
Yeah because a relegated team will totally survive…
Such a stupid argument. Pro/Rel will do nothing for MLS other tha scare off potential owners.
America (and their owners) will never go for promotion/ relegation. Who in their right mind would pay $100 million for a franchise only to have them relegated to a lower division the following year? We don’t have it in any sports and for good reason- it’s not needed.
The sole area I agree that MLS needs do de-mickeymousify is in the drafts rules. Time to do away with the drafts for returning USMNT internationals.Force them to take DP slots, instead!
Honest question, are you and the other elpaso person the same person? Cause your comments always have a similar vibe…
I’m glad to see USL Pro adding more of a geographical balance. Moving a team across the country to play one or two games puts a financial strain on some USL clubs. Also, regional rivalries are a plus.
I think Sacramento will succeed in building a strong fan base. I personally like the crest.
I sincerely hope Chivas USA becomes the Republic, & NASL put a team in LA. Call it LA. Aztec
Don’t know if you were doing it on purpose, but love the idea of the throw-back to the Aztecs. For those that don’t know (or you youngsters), the Los Angeles Aztecs were a NASL team in the 70s-80s team. The infamous George Best and Johann Cruyff played for them.
I remember listening to a Quakes-Aztecs playoff game on the radio with my Dad, might have been the semifinals….1-1 tie very late in the game, Best practically on the end line puts in a miraculous shot from no angle for a 2-1 win…My Dad said I cried for two days.
nice!
Finally soccer teams are getting BETTER at naming their teams and creating a crest. MLS, NASL and USLPro should ask teams to add to their uniforms and crest, their state flag colors and details.
I always thought New England revolution, would rebrand to Boston Republic or some other expansion team would get the name Republic but Sacramento was ahead of the game. As for FC, i like FC better than SC, because globally is futbol-football and why should we give respect to NFL, when they stole the word football but if you like SC, no prob.
Now when will New England, Chivas USA, Columbus rebrand, even Earthquakes and Fire but i know, earthquakes and fire fans love their name.
“Earthquakes” will always be around. I hear what you’re saying, but earthquakes does pull from the established soccer tradition in the area.. so in that sense should always be around.
However, 100% agree on the crest, uniforms.. etc. way classier ways to incorporate earthquakes into the name.
If the Kraft’s had any brains they’d rebrand the Revs as the Sporting Boston Celtics and start a USL Pro team, the New England Revolution (still playing in Foxboro) as a feeder team.
Should’ve been called the Carmichael Daves.
Great name and colors. I don’t think it’s a coincidence the crest resembles a sheriffs badge. The colors look like California State Parks Dept colors. California – especially Northern Cal – is known for its parks and nature.
Looking forward to some cool tan & brown park ranger style uniforms 🙂
Fantastic crest and name. The first big first score for the club. The middle star makes total sense as it reps Sacramento being the capital of CA. I was so-so in hearing Sacramento winning at USL Pro side. I was unsure of their soccer culture in the city but everything I’m reading and hearing has been positive. Hell, 15K came out to watch a 2nd division Mexican side, Dorados, and fairly unknown (in the US) Norwich City. Impressive!
Considering the few American born players from the area that are now in Mexico, in the Mexican NT player pool. Getting a USL team in Sacramento is nothing but positive.
If those kids had a local team to go see, be recruited by and aspire to.. who knows maybe they are in MLS right now.
Why not make the golden bear bigger and minimize the star? Right now, it looks like a sheriff’s badge.
yeah. the star is also on the CA flag, so i get why it is there. but i agree, seem like the grizzy should be the focus.
I didn’t realize that until you said it. It does look like a sheriff’s badge… good call.
It’s the west, looking like a sheriff’s badge isn’t a bad thing. I like it.
Thought it looked a bit like a beer label…
+1
Clearly stole their logo from Lone Star beer.

Really cool but agree about the bear/star. Bigger bear, smaller star.
The big red star looks kind of commie,
you all are funny, but agree with the star and bear suggestion
Good call. The crest/badge/name are outstanding, but you’re right.
Well, unless their mascot is a Bear, I disagree. The star stands for the city, the capital. They are not the Sacramento Bears.
It is ironic that northern California has a big red star as its logo if you ask me. A little funny.
The Red Star of California per-dates communism. It’s on the early flags.
cool name/crest. still wish someone would use “SC” or “AC” instead of “FC”.
Bring back AC St Louis!
love that name
AC St. Louis can play DC United for the TNT Cup. Who will have the biggest balls of all?
It would be quite the electric match-up.
The stadium would be shaking all night long
Only a Problem Child would miss that…love that early stuff.
