Americans Abroad: Midweek Rewind

Nearly a month after suffering a knee injury that initially looked to threaten his season, Brek Shea made his Stoke City return on Wednesday.

Shea started for the Potters in their 3-1 victory over Walsall in the Capital One Cup, starting and playing 45 minutes in the match played at Britannia Stadium. The outing marked Shea’s first official appearance for Stoke since March, and came almost a month to the day that he suffered an MCL sprain in a friendly against the Philadelphia Union due to a tackle from Matt Kassel.

Another player to receive a long-awaited start during the midweek action was Freddy Adu. The 24-year-old midfielder got the nod for the first time since joining Brazilian club Bahia in April, playing 71 minutes in the club’s scoreless draw with Portuguesa de Desportos in the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday.

Jozy Altidore also had a memorable moment earlier this week, as he scored his first official goal for Sunderland on Tuesday. Altidore sparked a late Black Cats’ rally that kept the club’s Capital One Cup hopes alive, scoring the first of four unanswered Sunderland goals in a 4-2 triumph over Milton Keynes Dons.

Jermaine Jones did not have as enjoyable of a performance on Tuesday. Jones helped set up a goal in Schalke 04’s Champions League qualifier vs. PAOK Salonika, but was sent off with a second yellow card in the 64th minute. Fortunately for Jones, Schalke still managed to pick up a 3-2 win that gave them a 4-3 aggregate victory despite playing with 10 men.

Here is how the Americans Abroad performed during the midweek action:

What do you think of these performances? What did you see from Shea in his first 45 minutes back with Stoke? Think Adu will start seeing more minutes with Bahia?

  1. I know he is young and it is early, but when do we start the Arriola watch for a call up? Obviousl won’t be for any of the qualifiers….so the January camp?

    • Unless he makes a SERIOUS impact, I doubt it. He’d have to knock off Herc and Boyd and I don’t think that will happen.

      • Not exactly. Arriola is more of a withdrawn forward/ number ten or wing player a la LD or Bedoya or Corona. He is a versatile skill guy rather than an out an out striker.

  2. Two pleasant surprises with Shea and Adu. Wouldn’t it be great if they both started getting consistent minutes. The national team pool is getting so deep it is truly incredible. I have never felt so good about our chances going into a WC before and I’ve been following the team since 1990.

  3. If LICHAJ!!!!!!(tm) can’t get a start against Millwall, he’s not good enough for the USMNT. Case closed.

    • You realize he has played every game this season, right? This is the league cup where most teams rest their starters in order to get fringe players a look. He has gone 90 minutes in every league game for a team that has only allowed 1 goal in 4 games in which they have 3 wins and a draw. Case reopened!

    • It’s super early for Arriola, but in the small sample size he seems to be way more dynamic than Corona. Solid wing options on the bench for the US begin and end with Shea and Bedoya. I think Arriola can sneak into that mix if he keeps up the solid play

    • I was watching it on and off. It was foggy but as I don’t speak dutch I cant be sure. They kept pointing the camera at fog. It wasn’t bad. The ref was pretty awful though.

    • It looks like AZ had taken a red card in the first minute (there must be a story there) and gone down a goal early in the second half. This is the second leg after a 3-0 away win for AZ, so they had some buffer, but abandoned seems to be a good outcome.

I assume that the red suspension stays for the individual player, but the team resets to 11 on the replay, right?

      • Per the AZ website, they’re continuing the match from the point at which play was abandonded. So, all the cards remain and AZ will stay down a player. The game will be at 11 in the morning because of the group draw in the afternoon.

      • Thanks. Seems like “suspended” might be a better word than “abandoned”, but whatever. AZ gave up another goal, but still went through on away goals.

    • My guess is that Mark Hughes gave him a runout in a less important game to build his fitness and to see how well he plays. Remember, Hughes is a new manager and Shea hardly played at all last year so Hughes probably hasn’t see him play a real game in person.

    • I didn’t watch the game, but heard good things about Shea’ appearance. Still interesting they would choose to start him for 45 rather than bring him off the bench in a regulation game (i.e. 3 subs).

Let’s hope Shea can get back into form soon.

    • There was a comment on the Sunderland messageboard that Shea was one of the two best players on the field in the first half.
