Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

The European seasons may still be young and some rust may still be evident, but that is not stopping American players from finding ways to make an impact.

Three different players scored goals for their respective clubs this weekend, including midfielder Sacha Kljestan. The Anderlecht regular set the tone for his club’s latest impressive victory, scoring the opener in a 4-1 triumph over KAA Gent on Sunday. The goal was the first of the season for Kljestan.

John Anthony Brooks also found the back of the net, and he did so in a Bundesliga debut that he will not soon forget. Brooks helped Hertha Berlin post a 6-1 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Old Lady’s return to Germany’s top flight on Saturday by scoring the winner with a low shot following a corner kick from the right side. The tall centerback went the distance in the match.

While Kljestan and Brooks were busy opening their 2013-14 scoring accounts, Aron Johannsson was busy adding to his. For the second straight week, Johannsson converted a penalty kick but this one helped AZ Alkmaar defeat Ajax, 3-2, on Sunday. Johannsson now has two goals in the new Eredivisie campaign.

What do you think of these performances? Impressed that three Americans scored on the same weekend this early into the season? Whose goal did you like the most?

Why did Boyd get subbed off after just 30 minutes? And against rivals Vienna?

Will Gyau get loaned out again?

What will it take for Lichaj to get called up?

    Is Fabian Johnson injured?

    • Beto

My questions too.. FJ is probably fine, dont know why he wasnt playing, as he is en route to Sarajevo to meet the team

      • Rami

Player on Boyds team got red carded, boyd was the casualty for a defensive replacement

      • Josh D

Thank you. The only thing missing from my favorite article is context. Glad the community can provide that!

  • Beto

Everything ok with TBoyd? Never seen a striker get subbed after 30 min w/o something bad happening…

  • bryan

sounds like Johnson is still having an issue? he dressed, so i guess that’s a positive. looks like chandler was benched. was hoping williams would start. parkhurst not even dressing.

    other than that, solid weekend!

  • Uncle Sam

Looks like Lichaj had another great day for Forest. Wonder how many more he needs to have before JK notices him.

    • slowleftarm

Probably a while since we have better players playing for better clubs in that position.

      • Lost in Space

Who exactly???? We may have starters but we’re not that deep @ wing back….
RB – Dolo (Injured), Chandler, Evans, Parkhurst, Beltran, Yedlin
LB – F. Johnson, Beasley, Castillo,
I’d place Lichaj as good or better than both Evans on the Right, and Castillo on the Left.

      • John

Right back might be the weakest spot on the roster if Cherundolo can’t get back to form. How deep can we be at the position when Brad Evans is starting there during Qualifiers.

      • DCUnitedWillRiseAgain

Its worse than that. Hannover signed Marcello, so I don’t think we will be seeing Steve again unless he prolongs his career in MLS.

  • ohmygab

I miss Clint Dempsey. Makes me cry. Would loved to see him at Spurs playing with Soldaldo. Heck even if he got 15mins a match, it’d be worth it as Spurs are going to the CL this season

  • 34djkaksiew

Who is this Brooks character? Are all German centerbacks 6’3/6’4? are any ever 5’7? also is Parkhurst heading back to MLS. Only had 2 games all last season at Augsburg. and what’s up with Tim Ream?

    • Lost in Space

You’d be hard pressed to find any CB who is under 5’11” anywhere in the world.
Parkhurst just isn’t good enough…he was brought in as insurance in the case of injuries because he can play anywhere across the back line. Expect him to be dropped by next year if anyone cares to pick him up.

    • Joamiq

If you want to know who “this Brooks character” is, you could start by searching through this site.

You’d be hard pressed to find many 5’7″ CBs starting any good leagues, given that size is kind of important at that position.

best special forces in the world?

US Navy Seals? US Green Berets? US Seal Team 6? US Delta Force?
    UK Royal Marines? UK SAS?
    Russian special forces?
    French Foreign Legion?
    Australian SAS?
    Norwegian HJK/FSK?
    Israeli commandos?

  • my world cup 23

which league should we send more of our younger players to?

    Mexico or Netherlands?

seems all our players wanna go to the Premier League, but they’re never ready for it

    • Lost in Space

BPL, Bundesliga, Italy, & Spain are the 1st choice options abroad….
2nd choice options for development would be Holland, France, Belgium, Championship & Turkey
      3rd would be Portugal
Scandinavian Leagues, Mexico, and MLS are all fairly similar so long as players get consistent Time.

    • Alex C

I think that developing American players have often had good experiences in Netherlands, Germany (either Bundesliga or 2nd tier), and Belgium, as well as Mexico. I would like to see a study done on injury rates between the different leagues. It seems like the BPL has a lot, but I do not have any hard data on that.

  • bryan

ESPN FC just reported they can confirm Brooks and AJ got a call up. Nothing shocking there.

  • Kevin H

Question about Jonathan Spector… I’m not very familiar with him, but just saw a throwback game of Man U vs. Arsenal from a few years back, and he played for Man U??? Who is this guy and why is he not a bigger part of the USMNT picture?

    • DCUnitedWillRiseAgain

Spector had some disastrous outings with the USMNT. He isn’t bad, but he might just lack the consistency for the International game. I think he is playing at Birmingham now? He is Champions League quality for sure. He may have improved his game since I saw him last, I’m not sure.

    • my world cup 23

muchos injuries and lost his form right before 2010 WORLD CUP and he’s been playing as a midfielder since 2011. Has got no love from JK

    • Dudester

I would prefer him ahead of Parkhurst, who started almost the entire GC.Yet he only played 3-4 games for his club Augsburg this entire year.Heck I would take guys like Beltran and Orozco over Parkhurst at RB.

    • Josh D

Spector is one of a few US players who played in United’s academy. Cooper is another.

United, like all the big clubs, have a big academy. For everyone one that breaks through, 20 are let go. It’s prestigious, but sadly, doesn’t mean too much 10 years later.

  • Dudester

Is dolo still recovering from the same knee injury he had last season. The one he got surgery for, if so that’s a lot of rehab for a knee injury that’s not a torn ligament.

    • Matt C

With his recent injury issues and particularly with the emergence of several right back options, i wonder if we’ve seen the last of Dolo.

  • Vincent

Will Freddy ever get a decent chance at Bahia? I would love to see him get into the best form of his life to then earn a super-sub position with the NATS next summer in Brazil. The current game has developed a “symmetry between scoring and not conceding” (see Slate article below) which often calls for special, wonderkind moments (I am thinking of Jesus Navas impact on the WC final)
I like Adu coming on in the 70th minute with the World Cup final resting in the balance ~
