The last time the Montreal Impact faced D.C. United, Ben Olsen’s side ran out 3-1 winners on August 3.

Back in Montreal on Saturday evening, the Impact were determined to make sure they took all three points. Marco Di Vaio scored twice for the Impact, his first goals since early July, and the Impact defeated D.C. United, 2-1, at Stade Saputo. The win was just the second time since July that the Impact had won an MLS match.

The Canadian side had marked D.C. United defender James Riley as a weak point along their backline, and targeted him early. Finally, in the 43rd minute, the Impact found their breakthrough as Justin Mapp got by Riley to center a ball into the box. A sly dummy by Felipe Martins allowed the ball to run through to Di Vaio, who scored from six yards out.

Though they were trailing D.C. United worked hard to make chances in their attacking third. Dwayne De Rosario had a positive performance, and teammate Luis Silva had a sharp shot on goal that Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins had to parry away.

D.C. United were rewarded for their play in the 81st minute when Silva played teammate Conor Doyle into the box, and the on-loan forward sent a great finish past Perkins to tie the game, and potentially save a point for his club.

Unfortunately for Doyle, who has two goals this season, both against the Impact, Di Vaio had other plans. Just two minutes after conceding, Di Vaio took on D.C. United’s Dejan Jakovic in the box, and sent a powerful strike past opposing goalkeeper Bill Hamid to return the lead to the Impact.

Both Olsen and his opposite number, Impact head coach Marco Schallibaum, were ejected in stoppage-time, and could face suspension for their next MLS matches.

Here are the match highlights:

didn’t get to watch the game. would be cool if the post included an explanation of why the coaches were ejected.

Check mls running commentary for fan reactions from the TV, still no explanation though. Maybe coaches press conferences are released?

I watched the game and can’t figure it out. Schallibaum was maybe interfering with play on a throw in, Olsen must have said something, he was tossed first, after the incident on the field.

  • arguably2nd place

isnt he like the top scorer in the league? I bet he’d still worthy of playing in SERIE A
