Galaxy recall duo from Strikers, loan them to RailHawks

Bryan Gaul

By FRANCO PANIZO

In one of the stranger transactions of the year, the LA Galaxy have recalled a pair of players who were loaned out to an NASL team only to ship them to another one.

The Galaxy announced on Thursday afternoon that they have recalled defender Bryan Gaul and midfielder Kenney Walker from the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and loaned them to the Carolina RailHawks for the remainder of the season. The move comes less than a month after LA decided to ship the duo to Ft. Lauderdale, but no explanation has been given as to why the change of heart.

A possible explanation could be the duo’s lack of playing time with the Strikers, as only Walker saw the field and he played in just one game.

Walker and Gaul will be eligible to make their debut for the first-place RailHawks this weekend when the club hosts Minnesota United.

What do you make of the Galaxy’s decision to recall Walker and Gaul only to ship them back out on loan to the RailHawks? Think they will see more time in Carolina?

  1. This is an example of why MLS teams should field full reserve teams in USL by ’15, though the affiliations with USL teams is still helpful. A full schedule against league teams, in persuit of trophies, with control over training practices and what all, will bring up MLS quality substantially over time. In the meantime, odd things like this will happen, while some MLS squads work with specific NASL teams.

  2. Strange indeed. Connor Shanosky played CB for 30+ matches last year down in Ft. Lauderdale. Obviously positions and depth affect playing time but that’s something to be considered.

  3. Sounds like they weren’t happy with the Ft. Lauderdale organization and that may extend beyond playing time.

@dunord Yeah. I heard some questionable things when I was down in South Florida. Not shocked.

  4. I don’t know if this means anything, but since Carolina put the Galaxy out of the Open Cup the last two years and the Galaxy had to travel twice to Carolina, maybe they got a look at the coaching staff and facilities at Carolina and just liked the whole operation better?????

Not saying that is true, but it could be an explanation….

  5. I bet this is also driven by the Paul Arriola situation. One of the reasons he has given for signing with TJ instead of sticking with the Galaxy system was that if he didn’t get quality minutes with the first team he could ask to get minutes with TJ’s U-21 team, which plays weekly matches against the U-21 teams of other Liga MX teams.

The Galaxy is sending a message that if someone signs with them, and the can’t crack the first team, a young prospect can count on a chance for a good loan and playing minutes with a higher tire NASL side.

  6. The obvious answer may be that LA wants them to get more playing time. However, if you look at the results from the Spring and the results so far this Fall, Carolina is a better team than Ft. Lauderdale. So it isn’t clear why players who can’t find playing time on the worst team in the league would surely see more time on one of the best.
