Other than Santos Laguna, no team in Liga MX has been more consistent in the last two years than Morelia.

Morelia leapfrogged Veracruz in Apertura round six with a 2-0 victory over Atlas, putting Monarcas at the top of the table with 13 points from six games. Ever since suffering a 4-3 defeat to Toluca in a wild game, Morelia have reeled off three wins and one draw to rise back up the table.

In the match against Atlas, Morelia saved two chances off the line on either side of halftime, one by goalkeeper Federico Vilar and the other by a defender at the post. In the 71st minute, Morelia forward Rodrigo Salinas broke the offside trap and beautifully took down a 50-yard pass, finishing to put the home side up 1-0.

Morelia added a second eleven minutes later when Aldo Leao Ramirez combined with teammate Juan Jose Govea to score, putting the game beyond reach for Atlas.

CHIVAS THRASHED BY PUEBLA AT HOME

In what ended up as his final game in charge, Benjamin Galindo looked on hopelessly as his Chivas side were mauled by Puebla, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Estadio Omnilife.

The day started brightly for the hosts as forward Antonio Gallardo launched a long-range strike past Puebla goalkeeper Jorge Villalpando to take a lead in the 10th minute. Two minutes later, the visitors equalized from a corner kick headed home by Jesus Chavez.

Chivas took the lead once more in the 36th minute when Rafael Marquez Lugo finished from inside the six-yard box, but again Puebla were able to level the score, scoring in first-half stoppage time to tie the match at 2-2.

From there, the second half went Puebla’s way. U.S. Men’s National Team member DaMarcus Beasley found space on the left side of the box in the 64th minute, and his cross into the middle was barreled home by Chivas defender Kristian Alvarez. Even worse, a poor back pass gave Puebla’s Matias Alustiza an easy goal with plenty of time and space to score.

PERALTA SHINES AS SANTOS LAGUNA RUN RIOT

Not many soccer players in Mexico had a better week than Oribe Peralta.

The Santos Laguna striker, fresh off scoring twice for Mexico in a mid-week friendly against the Ivory Coast, bagged another brace for his club side on Friday night in a 3-0 victory against Tigres UANL.

Peralta’s goals on either side of halftime came through two methods. His first, in the 36th minute, scored with a towering header at the back post. Peralta’s second in the 81st minute was via a left-footed strike on a breakaway opportunity, which put the match away.
