Earning a rare start due to an injury to Alvaro Saborio, Real Salt Lake rookie Devon Sandoval made sure to make head coach Jason Kreis not rue his selection.
Sandoval got on the end of a cross from teammate Olmes Garcia and scored just his second goal of the season in the 51st minute, putting his side up two goals on their way to a 4-0 victory against the Columbus Crew. The University of New Mexico product’s performance earned him SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.
Sandoval beat out DeAndre Yedlin, Andrew Ferrell, and Scott Caldwell for this week’s award.
What did you think of Sandoval’s performance for RSL? Which rookie stood out to you in MLS Week 26?

Glad to see Scott Caldwell getting recognized! That kid is wise and skilled beyond his years.
When did Salt Lake sign Inigo Montoya?
Dang it.. You beat me to it.
RSL fans have been calling him that ever since he started wearing his hair back, toward the start of the season.
My wife and I were both making Montoya references throughout the match. Someone needs to make a banner superimposing his head on Montoya’s, “My name is Devon Sandoval. Prepare to die.”
My name is Devon Sandoval. You killed my father!Prepare to die!
I should have read all the comments before I posted that.
So directly preventing three different goals doesn’t count as much as scoring one?
Sandoval’s goal is one thing but he also had an excellent game overall. His hold-up play was good. Like REALLY good. Article doesn’t mention that specifically but he definitely did not look like a rookie out there that night.
