Earning a rare start due to an injury to Alvaro Saborio, Real Salt Lake rookie Devon Sandoval made sure to make head coach Jason Kreis not rue his selection.

Sandoval got on the end of a cross from teammate Olmes Garcia and scored just his second goal of the season in the 51st minute, putting his side up two goals on their way to a 4-0 victory against the Columbus Crew. The University of New Mexico product’s performance earned him SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.

Sandoval beat out DeAndre Yedlin, Andrew Ferrell, and Scott Caldwell for this week’s award.

    • Sandoval’s goal is one thing but he also had an excellent game overall. His hold-up play was good. Like REALLY good. Article doesn’t mention that specifically but he definitely did not look like a rookie out there that night.
