Champions League winners Bayern Munich will face Europa League champions Chelsea in Prague today for the 2013 UEFA Super Cup.

It will be the first meeting between the two clubs since Chelsea beat Bayern in their 2012 Champions League final clash. Chelsea will be participating in the Super Cup for the second consecutive season, and Jose Mourinho and his men will hope to fare better than Roberto di Matteo’s squad did when they fell to Atletico Madrid 4-1 last season.

On Sunday, Liverpool will host Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will visit the Emirates in a derby double-header.

David Moyes’ move from Everton to Manchester United will see him move from one Liverpool derby to another, but Brendan Rodgers will attempt to thwart the Scot’s first visit to Anfield as manager of United.

Moyes has never won in 11 visits to Anfield, and has only managed to defeat Liverpool three times in 22 total meetings with the club. Rodgers is faced with his own difficulties, with Kolo Toure, Joe Allen and Aly Cissokho all being injury doubts for the match.

In the second derby match of the day, Arsene Wenger will meet André Villas-Boas in the North London Derby.

Both clubs have had their struggles so far through two league matches. Arsenal suffered a 3-1 defeat in their season-opening match against Aston Villa, and while Tottenham have picked up max points thus far, they are yet to score from open play in the league.

The meeting between the two London clubs has averaged over five goals for match through the last seven meetings, so it will surely be an interesting showdown.

  1. Cech has to be the best big game keeper out there. Gigi maybe about the same but Cech just always seems to be amazing in these games.

Neuer is good too just not “the best in the world.”(Better than Hart anyway.)

  2. This is nuts!

Chelsea should play with 10 men more often. They actually look better than when it was even strength.

    Goal Hazard.

  3. Mourinho sure knows how to make everyone strongly dislike or hate him. You have ramires playing aggressive as your destroyer on an early yellow and you leave him on? Might have been simpler to walk on the pitch and ask to play with only 10 men.

    • And with Juan Mata sitting on the bench it’s even more puzzling. Chelsea press is going to be lovely toward the “special” one.

  4. And that should probably do it.

Mourinhno refused to make any substitutions late into the game and Ramires picks up a second yellow as Bayern are pushing hard.

  5. Also–crazy statistic.

Ribery has been whistled for 5 fouls AFTER receiving a yellow card and he’s still on the pitch. That’s got to be some kind of record.

  6. Bayern are divers now? Robben always went down easy, but this is pretty ridiculous. Obviously Pep teaches the dark arts.

    Reply
    • Well Ribery and Robben have always been a bit… easy to fallover. That ref was really easy on the yellows. Some of them were very much deserved though. I wanna say there were too many but until the end they all felt deserved.

  7. Juan Mata–good enough to start for the greatest national team in the history of the sport… but not good enough to start for Chelsea.

    • I can’t find it, I have Xfinity with the sports package. Oh we’ll, I guess I’ll just watch the umpteenth Champions League rerun.

    • Chelsea/Bayern is on Fox Sports 2. Hopefully this gets less confusing for SBI writers once FSC shuts down and turns into FXX.

  8. I don’t think it would be 2 hard 2 include collegiate games here. Some of us follow that because we get bored easily out here in the heartland.

  9. The ManU-Liverpool game on Sunday is also on Telemundo. For those of us without cable but with a local Telemundo affiliate, that’s important to know. In fact, four ManU games are on Telemundo this fall.

  10. If that Timbers-SLC game is even half of what the last one was, I am going to enjoy the Friday night drinks.

    Thank you NBC.

    • How about “no thank you, NBC” on the Crystal Palace – Sunderland nationally televised match… are you kidding me? Two bottom of the table teams on national TV? Big swing and a miss on that one, I don’t even care if Jozy Altidore is going to play, he is not that big of a draw. Whoops.

      Reply
      • Wow, Jozy is a big draw. Every soccer fan in the U.S. as heard of Jozy Altidore. It’s not like NBC is broadcasting a game every week anyways..oh wait…

      • Not NBC’s fault. They play live matches that are available to them. If you have a beef with NBC, the games to nitpick are the 10 am ET slots (although I have PL Extra Time).

      • Just to have any match, especially one that includes an American field Player (a striker none the less), on a channel that I can get free by putting a wire coat hanger into the back of my TV, is a god send and something I thought I never see again.
