October 11 will be a special night for Peter Vermes and Joe-Max Moore.

Hours ahead of the U.S. Men’s National Team match against Jamaica at Sporting Park in Kansas City, the Sporting Kansas City boss will be inducted along with his former USMNT forward Moore into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place at 2pm local and is free and open to the public.

Vermes, who was elected to the Hall of Fame on the veteran ballot, played 66 times for the USMNT between 1988-1997, scoring ten times and helping earn the USA a place in the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Vermes spent eight seasons in Major League Soccer after it’s creation in 1996, starting with the New York Metrostars, moving to the Colorado Rapids, before finishing with the Kansas City Wizards.

Moore enters the Hall of Fame on the players ballot, having earned a century of caps for the USMNT between 1992-2002 and completing a decorated career at home and abroad. The Oklahoma native’s 24 National Team goals rank fifth all time in USMNT history.

In addition to his international exploits, Moore also played a number of seasons in Germany with FC Saarbrucken and FC Nurnberg, as well as spending three seasons with Everton in England. Moore played five seasons in MLS with the New England Revolution.

What do you think of this news? Happy to see Vermes and Moore inducted into the Hall of Fame. What are your favorite memories of the two players?

  1. NJ Soccer Legend at Delran High and Rutgers. Congrats to Peter Vermes. Him, Tab, Meola, Harkes were guys I looked up to growing up playing youth soccer in NJ. Good to see them get their dues.

  2. Is it being done in KC due to the home crowd for Vermes? Last WCQ game, or is something more at hand. There have been rumors of KC trying to lure/build a USSF Hall of fame.

  3. Both quality players. Vermes was one of the only young Americans with any playing experience abroad during his World Cup year. He played for Raba ETO in Hungary as well as FC Volendam in Holland, and later spent some time in the Spanish 2nd division (I think with Figueres sp?). Moore, the son of an oil barron who owned the Tulsa Roughnecks in the old NASL. As well as his time in Europe, Moore and Lalas both spent some time on loan in the Ecuadorian First division with Emelec. Congrats to both. Well deserved honors. For a certain generation of American players, these two were perpetual role models on the field. Well done boys!
