Since moving into Sporting Park mid-way through the 2011 season, the New York Red Bulls had failed to defeat Sporting Kansas City on the road.

On Saturday, the Red Bulls ended their drought, stunning a sold-out crowd with a 3-2 victory over Sporting KC, their first victory against the club since April 30, 2011. The win also sent the Red Bulls to the top of the Eastern Conference, making them an easy choice for SBI MLS Team of the Week.

The Red Bulls beat out the Houston Dynamo, Seattle Sounders, and D.C. United for this week’s award.

What did you think of the Red Bulls’ performance? Which team stood out to you in MLS Week 23?

  1. The New York Red Bulls beat the best team in the East on the road and now are tied for the most points in the league. I think it goes without saying that they’re team of the week.

  2. We beat KC in their house , team that’s been haunting us for some time . It’s all about scored goals , not how much possession or how many shots opposition had . If you would be getting points for that KC would beat us at home where we out scored them , but didnt put anything in the net . Same goes for home opener against DC Scum we spend 85 min on right by their pk box and no goals. We are top of the east , that was important game for 6pts you can say , and other best team in the league drew . So yes we are the team of the week , bc we beat second best team in the league .Goals differential only puts us in second in SS run , I think we are good.

  3. Ha, awarding anything to NYRB for that performance is shocking. The result was impressive, but the team of the week? No way. Seattle and DC United had the best performances of the week.

      • Most teams can actually win games on the road. I think it’s only we, as RB fans, who think winning a road match is a cause for ticker tape parades. It’s nice that we’ve figured out how to own our home arena, though.

  4. If you take into account transfers I believe that Sounders have to be the team of the week. They dropped some serious cash to get Dempsey and made a huge statement while doing so. Also fairly easily dismantled Dallas over the weekend. I get why this may only be based on performances on the pitch though so if that is the case NYRB is fine.

    • Are you overlooking the fact that RBNY also brought another US international (well youth international anyway) back home from Europe this week – Mike Grella!! Ha!!!

  5. Though I’m a NYRB fan myself, I have to disagree with the choice. NYRB laid back all match and had less chances and much less of the possession. You certainly have to give them credit for taking their chances and edging a good team on the road, but I have a hard time giving the team of the week award to a team that was outplayed in their own match. I’d give it to Seattle for winning their match and signing Deuce.

    • I think going into KC and claiming three points is pretty impressive even if the performance was far from dominant. I guess the lack of possession etc is another reason for some to immediately jump ship to New York Yankees FC in a year and a half.

      • I already said that they deserve credit for beating a good team on the road. The rest of your response I can only attribute to your crack habit.

      • What is this? Romper Room? For TomG…style points only count in figure skating, ice dancing etc. There are no style points for goals or wins. For slowleftarm, no true supporter makes a statement like that. One stays with their side through thick or thin.

      • This isn’t a tournament for chrssake, it’s an award for most impressive. Of course style points count.

    • I guess you didn’t see NY beat Montreal and RSL back to back. The thing about it is, a win is win. There’s no style points. You can ask
last years SS winner: San Jose.

      • What do Montreal and RSL have to do with anything? This is the team of the week, not of last week or the week before. Of course style points matter. You can’t be team of the week if you are arguably outplayed in your own match. I’m not sure you understand the award.

      • Tom’s trying to justify his impending switch of allegiance, complete with the purchase of a Shiekh Mansour jersey.

      • You keep smoking that crack while you do your business under the covers with your slow left arm in your mom’s basement.

      • Dude, you’re raving incoherently about Sheikh Mansour and Yankees FC in the middle of a thread which has nothing to do with either. I can only assume you’re either a child or have the brain of one.

      • Nobody saw NY beat Montreal and RSL back to back because NY tied Toronto 0-0 in an awful spectacle in between. They also lost to Colorado 2-0 before the Montreal game, and have a terrible habit of playing poorly against weaker competition. Next week’s game at Columbus is a real benchmark for them. Back to back road wins coming off the RSL game would signal that they have finally found some consistency.

      • Well put Adam! If the Bulls can win two on the road they would be on a roll. The Bulls have been pretty mediocre on the road so if they can turn things around there they may have a good shot a the Supporters Shield!

    • I disagree. We were on the road, so playing the counter-attacking style game is very much expected. What impressed me was how very well we executed that game. Yes, results count more than anything, but when the plan was to sit back, absorb the attack and counter, and we come out winning the way we did, I say it is clearly an indication of our team stepping up and playing the way they should.
