By JUSTIN FERGUSON

A pair of top-two clashes in Major League Soccer will highlight a busy Saturday night of action from all over the country.

Saturday night’s action will kick off in Kansas City with a massive Eastern Conference showdown between Sporting KC and the New York Red Bulls. First-place SKC will be looking to cap off an incredible week of All-Star festivities with a win over the second-place Red Bulls, undefeated in their last three matches.

Out West, the 2013 Rocky Mountain Cup will be decided in tonight’s battle between surging second-place Colorado Rapids and first-place Real Salt Lake. A home win for Colorado Rapids would bring the two rivals level for first place in the Western Conference, where just five points separate the top team and the playoff bubble.

Elsewhere in the Western Conference, two sides needing a victory for their respective playoff bids will square off at CenturyLink Field. After a crazy 24 hours of Clint Dempsey transfer news, the Seattle Sounders have scheduled a special presentation shortly before kickoff against FC Dallas.

Here is a rundown of tonight’s MLS schedule:

6:30pm – NBC Sports Network – Sporting Kansas City vs New York Red Bulls

7:30pm – MLS Direct Kick – D.C. United vs Montreal Impact

8pm – MLS Direct Kick – Philadelphia Union vs Chicago Fire

8:30pm – MLS Direct Kick – Colorado Rapids vs Real Salt Lake

9pm – MLS Direct Kick – Houston Dynamo vs Columbus Crew

10:30pm – MLS Direct Kick – Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas

11pm – MLS Direct Kick – Portland Timbers vs Vancouver Whitecaps

  1. when do we take the training wheels off this league? How long do we have to have single entity, no free agency, allocations etc?

  2. Probably should have been a red card against Vancouver as Valeri takes an elbow in the head plus a knee to the body and the Whitecap player (Rusin) hurt himself and was subbed out.

  3. Stewart is not too bad for the Quakes. He’s a decent offensive outside back.

In other good news for the league, if we sub Stewart out, we end up with a back line composed entirely of internationals: Morrow/Goodson/Bernardez/Beitashour.

    • Hey what ever happened to Ruiz? Is he even on the team? Still don’t know why Toronto got rid if Silva. Reminds me of New England robbing Chivas for Agudelo.

  4. Think even a point will be a good result for the Rapids, given the situation with the standings and the cup, and with the players they’re missing and the ones RSL is getting back from international duty…

  5. Yeek, Kansas City fans. “We Love Ya” 4 times in a half. Trying to take a jab at NYRB for being in New Jersey when you’re in the wrong state too. Great entertainment.

    • You think Kansas City (MO) should be in KS?

Or you think Sporting KC should be in MO (even though there is a Kansas City, KS and they don’t distinguish between the 2 cities in the team’s name)?

      Either way, doesn’t add up…

      • When people refer to Kansas City, they’re referring to Kansas City, Missouri. Kansas City, Kansas is not the Kansas City of lore; similar odd situation to NY/NJ. Even Kansas City people will say that. I don’t care where the stadium is and recognize that it represents the area. The point is, RBNY also doesn’t distinguish between being in NY state or being part of the NYC metropolitan area, so it’s a weak jab. Same situation.

      • I’m KC born and raised, so you don’t have to explain to me. 🙂

The situation is not analogous, though: no KC sports team has an issue with their name or who they represent, and neither do the fans. By contrast, the Red Bulls call themselves “New York” but play in New Jersey…

      • Kinda like the NFL Giants, Jets, and the celebrated NASL Cosmos?

Again, RBNY isn’t in NYC proper but represents the NYC metropolitan area, just like Sporting Kansas City don’t play in the real Kansas City, but represents the Kansas City metropolitan area.

      • Except that they play in KC and don’t claim to represent somewhere other than where they play. That’s the point. But OK.

      • They don’t play in the real KC. And are you claiming that the Giants, Jets, and Cosmos didn’t/don’t represent NYC?

      • To continue making claims such as that SKC doesn’t play in KC, or in the “real” KC, well it just reveals that you don’t know what you’re talking about. (shrug)

      • Are you a professional at avoiding questions and deflecting? Are you arguing that the Giants, Jets, and Cosmos don’t/didn’t represent the NYC area? And yes, SKC does not play in the city proper that’s the reason for the team existing.

      • Sorry, but the earth is a globe, not flat, and SKC plays in KC, not outside of it.

And you are the one making assertions about where SKC plays and so forth; I was only responding to them, not making other claims like you go on to ask about. I didn’t claim anything either way about any NY teams and don’t have the idea that they’re not somehow representing their metro areas. (That is also a notion you brought up, not me.)

      • Your area has a team because of Kansas City, Missouri. Your team does not play in Kansas City, Missouri. Deal with it, as Giants, Jets, Redskins, Galaxy, Chicago Fire, and many other fans have dealt with it.
You did, in fact, make claims about NY claims representing their area: “Except that they play in KC and don’t claim to represent somewhere other than where they play.” Don’t talk about what you don’t know about. I’m a proud NYC-ite and know what represents me.

      • I assume you mean the irony of me telling you not to talk about what you don’t know when I said that your team doesn’t play in the city proper. The thing is, that is a fact, and was made to point out the ridiculousness of SKC fans’ silly attempted insult. I love that I’m the one who’s not reading when you told me what my team doesn’t represent and then denied it. You literally cannot have a rational discussion.

      • Yes NYC metro area. RBA is closer to midtown Manhattan than Yankee Stadium. And of course the Giants/Jets play in NJ too. It’s one big metro area and a weak jab by some folks from flyover country who’ve probably been to NYC in their lives.
