The Pac-12 Conference kicked off the 2013 season in impressive fashion, knocking off multiple national powers and serving notice that the West Coast is going to have a say in determining a national champion this season.

UCLA, Stanford and California all went unbeaten despite each playing multiple powerhouses.

Cal, ranked N0 27 in the SBI Pre-Season Top 40, posted victories against Georgetown and Maryland, the top two teams in the country, while Stanford posted a 1-0-1 mark against those same opponents.

UCLA’s young squad grew up quickly, earning a scoreless draw vs. Notre Dame before posting a 1-0 overtime victory against defending national champion Indiana. Victor Chavez scored the golden goal to give the SBI No. 5 Bruins the victory over the No. 3 Hoosiers.

The post-Caleb Porter era began well for head coach Jared Embrick and the Akron Zips, who posted a pair of shutout victories to start the season, including a 1-0 triumph vs. Furman on Sunday.

The Labor Day weekend means there area some quality match-ups on Monday, with SBI No. 21 St. John’s taking on No. 16 Virginia and No. 17 Coastal Carolina facing No. 13 North Carolina in a match originally scheduled for Sunday before inclement weather forced a postponement.

Here is a rundown of all the weekend’s results featuring top college teams

Comments

  1. I realize they weren’t in your preseason Top 40, and not repped on your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd All-American Teams, but UAB just nabbed the #1 spot in the BennettRank rankings after whomping VCU 4-0 at VCU and High Point 5-1. No love?

They play Indiana at home (Birmingham, AL…I know – hope – you knew that) Friday night so perhaps next week…
