Impact eliminated from CCL despite victory over Heredia

Andrew Wenger Montreal Impact (Montreal Impact)

The Montreal Impact needed a six-goal victory over Heredia on Tuesday to keep themselves alive in the CONCACAF Champions League.

They got the victory, but not the six goals.

The Impact were bounced out of the Champions League despite beating CD Heredia, 2-0, at Stade Saputo on Tuesday night. Montreal looked to have a chance at pulling off the tough task of winning by six goals against the Guatemalan club when Daniele Paponi opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but ultimately the hosts were not able to muster enough offensively to avoid elimination.

The result leaves the Impact atop Group 5 for now with six points, but that is guaranteed to change after the San Jose Earthquakes and Heredia do battle Buck Shaw Stadium on Oct. 23. Heredia currently have six points while the Earthquakes have three and a better goal differential than the Impact.

Montreal, who also got a goal from Andrew Wenger on Tuesday, finished its first CONCACAF Champions League campaign with a 2-0-2 record. The Impact return to action on Saturday as they visit the Chicago Fire.

  1. Time for SJ’s B-team to get down to business. Their match comes at a tough time, sandwiched between an away match at LA and a home match at Dallas. Both of those are basically must wins if the Quakes want to make the playoffs, so it’s unlikely we’ll see the 1st team against Heredia.

  2. More pathetic results from CONCACAF! MLS needs to reform DP rules and let teams create better depth for these events, and a bit extra in salary cap.

    • No ?!?! Really ?!?!
MLS needs more money. Thanks for the post. Welcome back from some super club to the rest of the soccer world.

    • If San Jose wins the group, it will likely be four MLS teams and four Mexican teams in the semifinals. Montreal didn’t qualify via MLS but rather via the Canadian Cup route, so they represent Canada more than MLS.

MLS is doing quite well in this tournament so far.

  3. I gues this is their second first Concacaf Champions League campaign. If all goes well, they have a goodhot at a third irst Concacaf Chamions League campaign next year. Nothing like perpetual Concacaf Champions League virginity…

  4. Impact should have been up 3 or 4 goals at half. Inept finishing and poor touches from Nyassi and Wenger were reason they didn’t have more goals.
