Toronto FC has been one of the worst teams in MLS for most of the year, but if there was ever going to be a day when they would be able to dominate an opponent, it came on Saturday against a team of reserves fielded by the very worst team in the league.

D.C. United trotted out a squad of back-ups just three days ahead of their U.S. Open Cup Final clash vs. Real Salt Lake and paid the price as TFC ripped apart the make-shift squad in a 4-1 thrashing at BMO Field.

Jared Jeffrey opened the scoring for D.C. United with a beautiful goal, but that early lead lasted just 10 minutes. Darel Russell equalized for TFC to leave the match even heading into halftime.

The second half was a much different story, with Bright Dike giving TFC the lead for good when he volleyed home a Mark Bloom cross in the 67th minute. Four minutes later, Dike was involved again as he collected a D.C. turnover and sprang a counter that resulted in a Conor Shanosky own goal after Alvaro Rey sent in a cross that deflected off Shanosky and past D.C. United goalkeeper Joe Willis.

Rey provided the final dagger in the 87th minute when he danced through the D.C. defense and slotted home a low shot past Willis.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with Dike’s performance? Was that the worst D.C. team you’ve ever seen put on a field?

  1. A win is a win, however for next year, they are solid on the back line(exception of left back)mid field needs two players a journeyman who is good on the ball and a playmaker,up front a quality young striker

      • Oh don’t get me wrong, I agree TFC has been crap for their whole existence and yet every year I pay for my seat and go to the games. After the game we all just looked at each other and were wondering what we should do.

Winning whether it is against a good team or bad isn’t common but at least give us the win without excuses, DC United’s first team isn’t a powerhouse after all.

  2. TFC finally have their ducks in a row and given another yr, should be a team to be.reckoned with. They really just need two DPs (one striker, one playmaker)and a couple of another pieces to be significant.

      • Alavaro Rey, Bobby Convey are all solid. Morgan, Henry, Caldwell, Gale Agbo, Dike, Earnshaw, Laba, Osorio, Russell and Joe Bendik are all solid role players. Two marquee DP’s in a No. 10 and a striker along with a solid RB and 3-5 good signings and I think their set.
