Soccer Tuesday: Your Running Commentary

From 10 in the morning through late into the night, international soccer will be on display.

Tuesday marks the second of the September FIFA international fixture dates, with plenty of matches to watch throughout the day. In UEFA World Cup qualifying, Italy host the Czech Republic, England visit Ukraine, and Russia host Israel in three games to keep an eye on in the morning and afternoon.

In South American World Cup qualifying in the evening, Colombia takes the road to face Luis Suarez and Uruguay, while Argentina and Lionel Messi face struggling Paraguay. In CONCACAF qualifiers, the showdown in Columbus between the U.S. and Mexico is finally here, while Honduras looks to keep themselves in the running for a place in the World Cup when they host Panama.

While many of Tuesday’s matches are qualifying games, there are a few friendly matches to take note of. Spain hosts Chile in the afternoon and then Portugal faces Brazil in Foxborough, Massachusetts after sunset.

I’ll be in class tonight so I’m going to miss the Mexico game. Does anyone know if it will be replayed on ESPN3?

  • kl

tonight will really decide whose going to the WC. sure there are 2 more games in October and 2 more in November.

    France isn’t going for sure.

  • Gary Page

Wow, the Czechs just scored a couple of minutes ago against Italy on a counter attack, in Turin no less. Could this become an epic upset?

    • Gary Page

A header by Giacharinni (possibly a mistake by Cech) and then just a couple of minutes later Balotelli is fouled in the area and converts the penalty. Order has been restored.

  • SoundersOff

France is in serious trouble. We could be looking at one of the best teams in the world potentially out of qualifying.

    • away goals

France won’t catch spain but they’re still pretty comfortable in their bid for a playoff slot.

      • SoundersOff

In my defense, they were losing at half time and looked awful when I made this comment.

    • Michael Stypulkoski

“We could be looking at one of the best teams in the world…” That’s where you lost me.

      • Rusten Hurd

My top 3 favorites would be Spain, Germany & Brazil to win the World Cup next year but I would put France in a tier behind those three with teams like Argentina, the Netherlands and Italy with Chile, Colombia, Belgium and Portugal just a notch below that. Why do you think France is not one of the top teams in the world. They are loaded with talent — Ribery, Benzema & Clichy as vets with rising stars like Pogba, Giroud and Capoue — I think France is one of the most dangerous teams out there. It should be noted that they have been in the finals in 2 of the last 4 world cups. Unless you are defining “best teams in the world” extremely narrowly I think its pretty difficult to argue that France is not one of the top 6-8 teams.

      • Michael Stypulkoski

Yes, they absolutely are loaded with talent, but as the old maxim goes, that’s why the play the game on the field, not on paper. Their results in recent years have not been impressive. Yes, two of the last four WC Finals, but what does 1998 have to do with today? That was fifteen years ago! Those players have long since retired, and the current squad were mostly children at the time. The most relevant WC result would obviously be the most recent one, which they only qualified for after that Henry handball and went on to finish dead last in a fairly weak group.

France is a very talented group of players, but they are not an elite team.

  • Beckster

I can understand why all of my British friends bemoan the fate of the English team all the time. This game lacks in quality and the English players are not impressive. That being said, I certainly wouldn’t mind having a Gerrard or Lampard on the USA team!

    • Increase

I don’t see why Carrick isn’t on… Someone to actually pass the ball rather than just… whatever Frank and Stevie do.

  • MidWest Ref

I heard comments that CONCACAF is not deserving of its 3.5 slots for 2014. Why not?
Are there serious arguments that the 3-5 slots for African countries are more deserving than 3-4 for CONCACAF (assuming a win over New Zealand in the playoff)?
Same for Asia and its 4.5 (which will be 4 because they will lose to the South America playoff team)?

  • Increase

I love that Austria’s best player is clearly a Bayern left back. So they play him in midfield like we do with ours.

David Alaba is really quite good. I always surprised he doesn’t get more press.
