It was going to take something special to put an end to the Colorado Rapids’ league-best nine-match unbeaten streak and Graham Zusi provided that something special with a game-winning goal worthy of any match.

The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder left for his national team call-up in style, delivering a quality finish in the 88th minute to cap a stellar passing sequence and help Sporting KC post a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids.

Zusi latched onto a C.J. Sapong header pass and beat Clint Irwin with a low shot that secured the victory and moved Sporting KC into first place in the Eastern Conference.

Benny Feilhaber opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a beautiful long-range strike, but Edson Buddle answered in the second half with a 77th-minute equalizer.

The Rapids looked like they might escape Sporting Park with a point before Zusi’s beautiful finish.

Here are the match highlights:

  1. Thank God for that video ad on this site that starts up by itself and doesn’t include an option for muting it or clicking out of it. Without it, I don’t know what I would do… Maybe hear the Sporting video I was really interested in..

      • That was a close call. You make it sound as if dwyer pulled a de jong that led to the goal. It was a call that is probably only made half the time and 4 colorado defenders failed to close benny down with only one skc player making a run between him and goal. The blame can be spread around

      • Yeah, the blame can be spread around, including to the ref, who didn’t make the call. I never made it sound anything like a De Jong-style tackle or a particularly violent one, just that it was an uncalled foul. So as I say, it’s a shame when you find out that that great shot for a goal was only set up by something like that immediately prior to it.
