Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Brad Guzan helped the U.S. Men’s National Team extend their winning streak to three games earlier this week, and now he will aim to help his club continue a similar run.

Having played a part in the U.S.’s 3-2 disposal of Panama in this past Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier, Guzan quickly has to shift his focus to Aston Villa’s home game against Tottenham on Sunday. The 10th-placed Villans are currently on a three-game unbeaten streak in league play, but will likely need Guzan to show well in goal in order to have a chance at picking up a result against Spurs.

Another U.S. Men’s National Team player who could see the field is Michael Bradley, who has been included in Serie A leaders AS Roma’s game-day roster for Friday’s Derby del Sole (Derby of the Sun) clash with Napoli. Bradley is doubtful to start the game considering he has been out of action for nearly six weeks with an ankle injury, but he could be inserted late in the match if Roma are in need of some late possession, energy and grit as they try to improve to a perfect 8-0 record in league play.

Wondering what other match might be worth watching? Look no further than Jozy Altidore and Sunderland’s duel with Swansea City on Saturday. Altidore is still in search of his first league goal with the winless Black Cats, and he might have chances aplenty to end that in this road fixture as Swansea have conceded the fourth-highest amount of goals at this stage in the Premier League campaign.

    • no, he is not starting. there’s no way he’s displacing any one of strootman, pjanic, and derossi when they’ve started perfectly. look for him to start in one of the cup games, or just hope for roma to start losing.

      • That’s grim news. We’ll Johnson isn’t starting either and I don’t really feel like watching Anderlecht right now…

      • Bradley ‘was‘ starting regularly before the injury, as a point of fact. Now I agree it’s unlikely he’s going to start coming off an injury in any case. But to write him off completely is excessively negative.

      • It’s really not excessively negative. The injury has nothing to do with why he’s starting now. Roma has a new coach this year and he’s completely behind their starting 3 midfielders. Bradley started in their exhibition games in the US for obvious reasons, but the Roma midfield is completely settled at the moment. He’s #4. He’ll start if someone needs rest or if there’s injury. Otherwise, he’ll come off the bench as needed.
