Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Jozy Altidore’s quest for his first Sunderland goal in league play will take him to where his English journey initially began.

Altidore will not be short on motivation on Saturday, as he and Sunderland take to the road to face his former club, Hull City, at Kingston Communications Stadium. The Black Cats are no longer at the bottom of the Premiership table after having won their first game of the campaign last week, and they will be looking to use the confidence gained from there when they attempt to knock off the Tigers that Altidore represented on loan back in 2010.

Another match in England worth keeping track of is Queens Park Rangers’ clash with Derby County. The Saturday tilt could mark the Hoops debut of Oguchi Onyewu, who has made the bench in his first two games since signing with the club last week. A win for QPR could further improve their chances of being promoted by potentially moving them into second place in the Championship.

John Brooks is another centerback that will be hoping to return to action. Recovered from the arm injury he suffered in late September, Brooks is a candidate to start on Saturday when Hertha Berlin take on Jermaine Jones and Schalke 04. The match will not just be a possible battle of German-Americans, but it also a clash of two teams in the top half of the Bundesliga table that are currently only separated by one point.

  1. Jozy to score against Hull? Have any one of you seen Hull City play this season? Because you write something does not mean it will happen.

  2. Alfredo Morales is having a good game today for Ingolstadt. He should ahve 2 assists and a goal at this point but for a couple great saves by the opposing GK and some poor finishing from his teammates. Ingolstadts goal came from a corner that Morales created. He also looks like he has grown/filled out this year compared to last. I would like to see him called into the friendlies this month, I think he could contribute. I think he is playing a bit more advanced mid today, he is really helping start the attack.

  3. In a strange way, I think it’s good that Jozy is playing at a team where he doesn’t get much service. This will help prepare him for the WC.

  4. Jozy had a good game last week, but still was panned by many Sunderland “fans”. He would need at least two against Hull to get a positive comment.

    • I watched the game the announcers were raving about how well he played. He was in the middle of both Sunderland goals and he was rated as Sky Sports Man of the Match – despite not scoring. Anyone who panned him has thier head up thier “arse” (as they say).
