California’s hold on the top spot on college soccer grew much tighter after the Golden Bears’ latest signature victory against a top opponent.

The Golden Bears beat UCLA, 3-2, on Sunday, with junior forward Stefano Bonomo providing the game-winning goal in overtime to help Cal keep pace with Washington atop the Pac-10.

In the Big East, Marquette jumped to the top of the conference after pulling off a mild upset in a 1-0 victory vs. Creighton. Golden Eagles striker C Nortey scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season, while goalkeeper Charlie Lyon recorded four saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season.

Upsets continued to abound around the country, with Xavier beating Georgetown and Wofford upending Elon.

The final perfect record in the nation saw its first blemishes as previously unbeaten and untied Dayton settled for a pair of draws as the Flyers opened Atlantic-10 play with ties vs. George Washington and Fordham.

Here is a rundown of how the top teams in the country fared over the weekend:

    • Wisconsin over Indiana was in no way an upset. Indiana is 4-8-1, universally unranked, and has an RPI of 74. Wisonsin is 9-2-1, ranked in teh top 20 and has an RPI of 28.

      • All true. I was thinking of it more in the context of recent history, not just this season. Wisconsin hasn’t really done anything of note since 1996 (in fact, other state schools Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Green Bay have all fared better) while Indiana has consistently been a better team in the last 15 years and won last year’s national championship.

Also, Indiana’s fans looked pretty upset.
