FC Dallas will have a new man at the helm next season.

Following a disappointing 2013 campaign that saw the side miss the playoffs for the second consecutive year, FC Dallas announced on Friday that head coach Schellas Hyndman will step down at the end of the season, ending his five-year run with the club.

“I truly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the FC Dallas family for the last five years,” Hyndman said in a statement. “After a lot of thought and consideration, I feel the time is right for me to step down as head coach of FC Dallas. I want to thank the Hunt family for their support and friendship, our players, coaches and front office for their dedication and effort during my time here, and especially the great FC Dallas fans.”

Hyndman is only three years removed from being named MLS Coach of the Year as he lead FC Dallas to the MLS Cup final, though they fell to the Colorado Rapids. Since then, the 61-year-old boss has failed to replicate the success he brought that year, as his aging side struggled in the second half of this season.

Since the beginning of June, FC Dallas have won just twice, despite starting the season with seven wins out of first 11 games. Overall, Hyndman has amassed a 62-57-58 record during his time in Frisco, Texas.

FC Dallas chairman Clark Hunt said in the press release that the search for a new coach would begin effective immediately.

  1. There is a certain Egyptian coach about to be out of a job that should be high on people’s lists. He got Chivas in the playoffs…

Dallas has a persistent defensive problem they need to deal with. If you allow 50 goals (roughly 1.5/game) I wouldn’t expect playoffs.

  2. Hey Warzycha is looking for a job. Hunts were loyal to him in Columbus. They sell team, he gets fired. It’s the least they could do for the Polish Rifle.

  3. Yawn. Hyndman was alright but it was time to go. He isn’t the problem, though.

Where other clubs have dynamic risk-taking entrepreneurs at the helm, HSG is a careful steward lacking ambition.

Wake me when FC Frisco grows a pair.

  4. Has to hurt that they lost the GM to Colorado who is now doing so well.

I didn’t think Hyndman was particularly great or terrible. FCD has looked very much like a borderline playoff team over the past two years and just ended up on the wrong end of equation. Not that I’d consider barely scraping through a success, but it provides some perspective on things.

As a TFC fan, I have to admire their front office stability in comparison to ours. But then again, I’d admire just about anything short of Palermo
