As far as Clasico debuts go, you could do a lot worse than the one enjoyed by Neymar.

The Brazilian star was at the forefront of an impressive team performance as FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid, 2-1, in the first installment of ‘El Clasico’ of the new La Liga season.

Neymar put his stamp on the game in the 19th minute when he latched onto a perfect pass from Andres Iniesta, and tucked a shot past Diego Lopez to make it 1-0.

Barcelona controlled much of the play in the first half, but Real Madrid turned in a better showing in the second half, with manager Carlo Ancelotti making effective changes that allowed the visitors to get back into the match.

The equalizing goal eluded Real Madrid, and Chilean Alexi Sanchez provided the dagger in the 78th minute with a brilliant chip shot that made the score 2-0.

Real Madrid pulled one back in second-half stoppage time, with 20-year-old top prospect Jese doing the honors, but that was as close as Real Madrid could get.

The match was a thoroughly disappointing one for Gareth Bale, who was ineffective playing in place of Karim Benzema and Isco

The victory pulls Barcelona six points clear of Real Madrid in the La Liga standings, and four points behind second-place Atletico Madrid, which plays Real Betis on Sunday.

  1. I know Madrid wanted a huge splash signing… But would you really rather have Bale than Ozil? Even if they were the same price? I’m not sure I would.

  2. So if this is how Neymar is going to respond to big pressure, can we write Barcelona into the UCL title and just give them the Liga trophy now?

Ridiculous. Focus on Messi? You wind up with open or single marked Iniesta and NEYMAR. Focus on Neymar and you leave Messi single marked.

It’s entirely possible they have 4 of the top 10 players in the world on their team. Insane.

    • True. And I’m I Barca fan. But I t think we could say the same about Bayern so I wouldn’t be penciling in a Champions League trophy yet. But Neymar is awesome. I watched him at Santos when I could and I thought it’d take longer for him to adjust. He didn’t set a foot wrong today. Incredible stuff. And Iniesta continues to be the most majestic player since Zidane.

  3. Neymar and Iniesta were on another level from everyone else on the field.

Pique played the most solid game I’ve seen him play in a long time.

  4. I’m not a Barca fan at all, but Neymar is a fantastic player. I wasn’t sure how he’d adjust to Europe, but it seems that he’s adjusted just fine.

I wonder if he’ll ever move to England.
