Panama vs. USMNT (SBI Live Commentary)

USAPanamaLogosHEX

The U.S. Men’s National Team closes out the Hexagonal Round of World Cup qualifying tonight with a visit to Panama City to take on a Panama side that desperately needs a win to have any hope of reaching the World Cup (9:30pm, beIN Sport).

Jurgen Klinsmann will be trotting out a starting lineup with plenty of players getting a rare chance to start in qualifying, and the match will serve as another audition for players looking to earn their places on the 2014 USMNT World Cup team.

For Panama, the task is simple. Win and hope for Mexico to lose to Costa Rica and the Canaleros can reach the World Cup Qualifying playoff series vs. New Zealand.

SBI will be providing live commentary on tonight’s match so please feel free to follow the action here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Tonight’s commentary is after the jump):

    • None of the teams in the WC are as stupid as Panama. They know better to hold onto a lead by retaining possession and taking the ball to the corner, not trying to blast through two defenders in the center of the field.

  1. Dear Mexico,

Due to our generosity, please refrain from throwing urine filled cups at our players and fans, and shining laser pointers in our goalkeepers’ eyes from this point forward.

    Thanks.

  2. What a night!! WOW!!!

You gotta love the drama of it all. Best way to let Mexico know (and suffer with) the fact that WE gave them a second life.

If Panama was not good enough to beat the team we put out there tonight then I’d rather Mexico have another bite at the apple.

      • No, no its not. How is that sweeter than Mexico NOT going to the World Cup? How is that sweeter than sweet, sweet Mexican tears.

      • And? Mexico not going to the World Cup is Mexico NOT GOING TO THE WORLD CUP. You clearly do not have an American soccer fan’s hatred of the Mexican soccer team. Are you from Canada?

      • I disagree entirely. Sure it would be humiliating if they had been eliminated outright tonight. But this is similar to the “quick execution” vs “resigned to a life of shame” argument. It’s much easier on the Mexicans to be eliminated tonight.

This is only the most recent of a year+ of horrendous lackluster efforts. Had they been sent home, they would shrug it off, “it was Chepo’s fault” “the players didn’t have their heart in it” “they were the WRONG players” blah blah blah… I can almost hear Mexican fans parroting these denials for years to come.

But you are talking like these results tonight have qualified Mexico when they haven’t! The ultimate shame (and bragging rights scenario for US) involves the USMNT gifting them a lifeline (as we have) only for them to foul it up and LOSE to New Zealand and not go to the World Cup.

  4. well damn – I don’t mind the US winning, but any chance to send Mexico packing without it hurting yourself, you gotta take it!

The funny thing is, no Mexican fan alive will admit that they owe the US their World Cup lives.

  6. I don’t think I’m capable of rooting against the US. As much as I want to see Mexico out of the World Cup, that hurt when Tejada just scored.

  7. Seriously, come one US, blow this match. I don’t care about “momentum” in a game 8 months before the world cup. But I would love to see Mexico already out

  8. Why not play at least Wondolowski or Johannsson? Boyd has not played much with any of these guys. Looks like Klinsmann does not want a win. He wants to tie considering the subs he is using

  9. I used to think if like to see Mexico eliminated from qualifying, but that’s nothing compared to watching El Tri relying needing a U.S. win to qualify.

  10. Watching the Mexico v. Costa Rica game. On pre-corner and pre-free kick scrums, Rafa Marquez is kicking guys, pushing guys down. Such a dirty player.
