On Saturday evening, Gabriel Torres showed exactly why the Colorado Rapids made him their first ever designated player when they signed him in August.

The Panamanian international star scored two goals in the Rapids 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps, including the game-winning-goal in the 77th minute on an absolute blast into the top corner. Torres’ stellar performance made him our choice for SBI MLS Player of the Week.

Torres beat out Nick Rimando, Matt Hedges, Tim Cahill and Diego Fagundez for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Torres’ performance? Which player stood out to you in MLS Week 35?

  1. BTW, the media guys at the Rapdis have made it known that his nickname is Gaby, not Gabby, and that he’s pretty serious about it.

  2. I think the league will quickly find that he cannot be safely left in single coverage. I think Buddle knew that when he saw Torres alone with one defender on the other side of the pitch, and made that great pass.
I’ve also been impressed with Torres’ patience with the ball since he’s arrived. Though hired to score goals he’s made some outstanding passes to other players moving into a scoring position.

  3. Keep replaying that goal in my head. You could see what was coming as he moved to get it on his left. Especially happy for him after what must have felt like just such a crushing blow in qualifying just a few days earlier.

  4. What do I think of Gabby’s performance?? Let’s just say my vocal cords have certainly been feeling it after watching the Rapids pulled off an all-important comeback Saturday at DSP. Even without the goals he was spectacular. He’s teased the Rapids faithful with glimpses of his talent but Saturday was the coming out party. Boy, did he make big splash. It’s exactly what we’ve been waiting for. Gabby’s going to reek havoc on opponents — just you wait. I just hope to goodness the Rapids secure that playoff birth. Gabby is going to play an important role.
