If he needed a signature game to boost his chances of winning MLS Rookie of the Year, Colorado striker Deshorn Brown delivered it on Saturday.

The Jamaican-born striker notched a pair of goals, including the second-fastest goal in MLS history, to help lead the Rapids in a 5-1 thrashing of the Seattle Sounders. The performance made Brown the easy choice for SBI MLS Rookie of the Week.

Brown locked up this week honors after scoring twice, including an impressive tally that saw him beat fellow Rookie of the Year candidate DeAndre Yedlin in the process.

Brown beat out teammate Dillon Powers and LA Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes for this week’s honors.

What did you think of Brown’s performance? See him bring front-runner for Rookie of the Year?

  1. Powers interviewed on ExtraTime Radio today. Not a thrilling interview but good to see him get in the spotlight. And they did a quick but excellent job of commenting on the problem both these guys may run into, namely that the Rapids are just not one of the league’s darling teams. They noted the absences of O’Neill and Klute from the 24 Under 24 voting results and wondering if Powers and Brown would similarly suffer in the ROTY voting, since most people basically write off the Rapids. Pareja will have an even harder time in COTY voting for the same reason. Hopefully that stomping of almighty Seattle on national TV may earn a few of them and the team in general a bit more consideration from some.

    • Oops — hadn’t made it to the end of the podcast at that point and now I see that they also said Pareja would have that same issue due to being in Colorado. But then I said that on the COTY update last week, too (you could look it up!).
