Rookie standouts lead Rapids in rout of Sounders

The Colorado Rapids needed a victory at home on Saturday night to create some breathing room between them and the teams chasing the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Not only did they secure that victory, they registered the type of jaw-dropping performance that just might propel them beyond simply being a team that makes the playoffs.

A four-goal first-half blitz, led by rookies Deshorn Brown and Dillon Powers, helped lead the Rapids to a 5-1 thrashing of the Seattle Sounders at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night.

The Rapids needed just 15 seconds to jump all over the Sounders, with Brown scoring the first of two goals on the night. That fast opener was the second-fastest goal scored in MLS history, second only to an 11-second goal from Dwayne DeRosario in 2003.

Before Seattle could recover, Powers made it 2-0 in the 10th minute. Then Brown abused fellow Rookie of the Year candidate DeAndre Yedlin on his way to scoring his second goal. Drew Moor added a fourth before halftime to complete the dominating first 45 minutes of action.

Seattle improved in the second half, and pulled one back courtesy of an Eddie Johnson goal, but that’s as close as the Sounders got, with Gabriel Torres scoring his first goal for the Rapids late in the match to provide the final tally on a dream night for a Rapids side that suddenly looks like a team nobody wants to deal with in the playoffs.

The victory moved Colorado into fourth place in the West, three points ahead of the LA Galaxy, who face Chivas USA on Sunday. The loss, coupled with Real Salt Lake’s tie vs. FC Dallas on Saturday, dropped Seattle to second place in the West, and keeps them two points behind the New York Red Bulls in the race for the Supporters Shield.

  1. How could this happen???

    Seattle inveted soccer

    And hipsterism
    And beards
    And liberal activism
    And bicycles
    And grunge
    And rain
    They are the original Portlandia

  2. It was great to chant “rookie of the year” after brown scored. Then to chant it again after powers scored. To chant it a third time after brown scored was just icing on the cake. I’d have to say powers has been the better player this season, but having 2 good candidates is lucky for a fan to have. Props to pareja and his team for their their scouting and grooming abilities

  3. Seattle does this a couple times every year and it doesn’t make any sense why. They laid a similar egg down in LA earlier this year. Congrats Colorado that was a thrashing

  4. As a Sounder fan I have to congratulate the Rapids. They were more focused, talented and energetic in the first half. Unfortunately, the Yedlin vs. Brown future national teamers does not look good for the USA. Yedlin can be blamed for two goals while the rest of the back line simply looked out of it. Zach Scott is a walking red card waiting to happen and great energy does not always substitute for lack of speed and talent on his part.
Eddie Johnson seemed to be the only person playing well with some good bits from Rosales. EJ should of had two more goals.

The parity in this league is making these last few games come down to the wire. Should be exciting to watch.

  5. I enjoyed watching that game. Not just because of the outcome. I love when “super club” teams underestimate their opponent and get their butt handed to them.
I know Dempsey is out but where was martins and shalrie Joseph? Seattle thought they could skate through with a B lineup and they paid the price.
Colorado is a dynamic team that has more than 2 weapons. Thats something my Crew need to work on.

    • You’re not a “super club” if you’ve never won the cup. Much like New York, Seattle wishes they were a “super club.” Also, I’m not sure they underestimated Colorado. The lineup Colorado put out there was simply four goals better than the lineup Seattle put out there. Colorado is legit. Perhaps Seattle’s peak ended two weeks ago.

    • Martins didn’t travel due to a groin strain, Shalrie didn’t play because he has been terrible. The lineup, when you consider injuries, was about the best they had (and in my mind that line up should have done better).

      • Makes me wonder: Hypothetically, if we subtract LA and SEA’s DPs, which is the better team? SEA has the better record, but I lean LA. Thoughts anyone?

      • so your saying LA loses the best player pretty much in their history, and seattle loses a player they really have not even had yet, and LA would be better off? im gonna say no.

  6. Both Brown and Powers fell way lower in the draft than the pundits predicted now they’re two of the best in the league. Crazy that the pundits know better than the gms sometimes in this league.

  7. It goes without saying, but Seattle’s defense was nonexistent. By the third goal, Gspurning looked genuinely perplexed by his team’s performance. Great all around effort by Colorado.
