The defending UEFA Champions League title holders proved that even with a new coach, not much has changed from last year.

Even though they were playing on the road at the Etihad Stadium, Bayern Munich thrashed Manchester City, 3-1, becoming the first European side to win at Man City’s ground in the Champions League. Bayern went down to ten men with five minutes remaining but it was too little too late for Man City, as Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben, and Franck Ribery all scored for the German club.

Real Madrid picked up a morale boosting win, defeating FC Copenhagen, 4-0, at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria scored a brace for Los Blancos in the rout and the two combined for a particularly special goal in the 65th minute. Karim Benzema played a back-heel pass to a sprinting Di Maria in the box, who sent a rabona cross in the middle for Ronaldo to easily head home.

It wasn’t a great evening for the likes of Anderlecht (lost, 3-0, home to Olympiakos) and Benfica (lost, 3-0, away to Paris Saint-Germain), who were both held goalless by their opponents. For Anderlecht it’s the second consecutive match where they’ve been shutout. Manchester United’s day wasn’t much better either, as they slumped to a 1-1 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk. Danny Welbeck put the Red Devils in the lead in the 18th minute but Taison struck back to level for the Ukrainian club in the 76th minute.
