The San Jose Earthquakes’ MLS season may be all but finished, but their CONCACAF Champions League dream is still alive thanks to another heroic goal from Chris Wondolowski.

Wondolowski helped the Earthquakes advanced to the quarterfinals of the competition on Wednesday night, scoring a second-half winner in a 1-0 victory over Guatemalan outfit CD Heredia in their group-stage finale at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The victory pulled San Jose even on points with Heredia and the Montreal Impact in Group 5 (six apiece), but the Earthquakes finished in first as they had the group’s best goal differential.

Wondolowski scored the winner in the 62nd minute with a right-footed volley, but the Earthquakes received a bit of bad news as centerback Clarence Goodson was sent off with a second yellow card in second half stoppage time. Goodson will miss San Jose’s next game in the tournament.

Here are the match highlights:

    • The red was a complete concacrap joke. Goodson lines up to take the kick. a Heredia player stands 5 yards in front of the ball. Goodson waits for him to back up which he does but then quickly steps back up. Goodson waits again for the guy to back away and the ref runs over to give Goodson a yellow for time wasting – unbelievable. I think there was about three seconds left in injury time when this happened. That was Goodson’s second yellow of the game, so that atrocious job of reffing just cost SJ their starting CB for the next round…truly pathetic.

  1. Wondo is the greatest American goal scorer in the history of mankind. I wish he would adopt me and teach me how to fight grizzly bears.
