Julian Green’s successful season with Bayern Munich’s reserves has been rewarded.

After scoring 15 goals in 18 games with the German giants’ second team, Green has been called up to Bayern’s squad for their Wednesday UEFA Champions League group game at CSKA Moscow. Green is replacing injured striker Mario Mandzukic on the roster for the Group D encounter and could be handed his Bayern debut by head coach Pep Guardiola despite not playing in a league match yet.

The 18-year-old Green, a dual-national who can play for either the U.S. Men’s National Team or Germany, recently signed his first professional contract with Munich. The deal ends in 2017.

What do you think of Green being included in Bayern’s Champions League squad vs. CSKA Moscow? Think there is any chance he gets on the field?

  1. DOOM!!! ANGER!!! RAGE!!!!!

    Will you all relax please?

He is kid and if he is good enough, he will play for Germany.

I for one would rather have a bunch of truly homegrown heros lose in the World Cup than all of these half-Americans win.

So what that he this paper thin connection to the United States. Speaking as a dual-national myself, you can’t replace the experience of growing up in one country and it’s influence on your life. Having the second passport doesn’t change the base.

Just for an example; I’m American first and Brazilian second. Regardless of my father, my second passport, my language skills, living aboard, working aboard, traveling aboard and even dating aboard, I am and always will be American FIRST.

The same is true for this kid.

Get over it people! I want real Americans on the team. No more half-German rejects.

    • So basically you are saying you are a “half american”. Green’s father was a GI serving his country,. I’d say that makes him more American than you ever will be based on your “half american” garbage comments. There is no such thing as a “half American”, bozo.

      • You need a hug.

        Get over yourself bro.

Jeez, there has always got to that one guy who can’t “get it”.

I was pointing out what it’s like to be a dual national.

Green has spent the vast majority of his life in Germany. He is German, not American. It’s is language and culture. He should, and has every right, want to play for Germany.

And let’s be honest; apart from Boyd, our “German-Americans” play for the US because they can’t cut it for the Germans. If Green plays for the US, it’s because of this.

      • These debates have become rather boring at this point. However there was an article recently on ASN where Brooks talked about how he went to a school for American’s in Germany and only spoke English there until the 6th grade. A lot of these guys have complex backgrounds and its not nearly as simple as you and others want to make it.

    • You and Green both have dual nationalities and you’re more “American “? What a load of hypocritical BS.

Green has more than a “paper thin” connection with the US . His English appears to be quite good.
      From Brian Scaretta:
“Born in Tampa, Florida, on June 6, 1995, Green is the son of an American father and a German mother. When he was two years old, he moved to Munich with his mother and older brother.
He would, however, maintain strong ties to the United States frequently returning to Florida to visit his father and extended family.
“We did a lot of things sports-wise,” said Julian’s father, Jerry Green. “Even at the early ages, Julian always had a ball in his hand. From the time he could walk, he would stand with a ball—any kind of ball: football, basketball—it didn’t matter. He used to play hockey and was a great hockey player. He eventually chose soccer.”

  2. I don’t really get how his club success has anything to do with what country he will play for. Germany is filled with young talented players on teams like Dortmund and Munich.etc.. By all indications he is leaning towards the USMNT, that he has made BM’s CL roster all a sudden changes where he wants to play? If it he had accepted an actual Germany call-up then I would agree that we had lost him.

    Reply
    • But He didnt accepted an actual USMNT call-up and went playing for germany’s U19 instead…maybe u didn’t lose him completely yet but the odds are against you….

      Reply
      • Accepting the U19 call up just means he stayed sharp since he wasn’t training with the US.

        It keeps his options open.

        No more no less.

      • Dude if he wanted to play in the WC for the USMNT this is the time to join the team, this is the time to accept the Invitation ..he didnt. Why would he decline if he really wanted to be part of the USMNT? IT doenst make sense.
He wants to try his luck with the N11. Shouldn’t he be able to make the N11 in the LONG RUN he may try his luck with the USMNT.but only if he can’t make the N11.
The only significant tournament the USMNT can be part of is the WC. The N11 has the WC and the European Championship and they are one of the favorites everytime. USMNT is not. Why would he waste his chances to ever win a big tournament by playing for the USMNT a team that will never win the WC in his career. If u are ambitious ( and he is) you would try to take the harder path with the bigger chances to win a title
Player want to win titles with their national team thats what it is about. They dont earn money with the national teams its about success.
Besides he can learn more in the U19 in germany then with the USMNT.

      • Green and I don’t talk so I can’t tell you why he did not accept a call up by the US.

        But then neither can you.

You don’t know more about Green’s state of mind than anyone. None of us know anything about what Green really will do.

I can think of reasons for both sides.

The fact that there are a lot more factors in favor of him playing for Germany does not mean he will play for Germany.

I just means it is more LIKELY that he will play for Germany.

However, there are an awful lot of good young German players out there. Why are you so certain Germany will cap him?

What he has accomplished already is outstanding but this is just the beginning. He has plenty of time to become the next great player or the next Freddy Adu.

In either case, if he turns out to be a good winger and Germany chooses not to cap him, I have no problem taking him and capping him if that is what he wants.

      • What are you talking about of coarse they earn money playing for a national team. Do you really think these guys are doing it for free?

      • Also they do earn money based on succes as each team works that out with there federation. For example German players would have each got 250,000 euros if they had won the World Cup in South Africa.

      • Dude the only scenario they get money is when they win a title. So what was the last time germany win a title? Exactly!
So yes they are not doing it for money. Its definitely not the motivator

      • Each country has a players union the works a deal with the federation on what players get. While its not much compared to there club salaries they are paid for everything from friendlies to World Cup rosters. Its not a motivating factor but I was just saying they do earn something.

      • Don’t exclude money entirely.

While the money a player makes when playing for his national team is not neccessarily great, being an international does have value in terms of transfer fees and possible endorsements.

Of course being a starter for a high profile team like Italy, England, Spain or Germany is intrisically more commercially valuable than being a starter for Luxembourg or Burkina Faso.

Plus if you are going to Brazil as a member of a World Cup team that is an experience you can’t buy and can’t put a price on.

Besides, in the modern era, name a great American player that was never capped. It’s a career milestone.

  3. You americans are funny..he is with the german U19 national team. So by that alone I think he is going to play for germany. Klinsmanm tried to call him for the last 2 usmnt games and he refused and went to the german U19 game instead. The only way he is going to play for the US is when he is not good enough for the german national team… the USMNT will be the sloppy second like always…keep hoping
Why would a sane professional football player choose USMNT over the N11 …keep dreaming…bahahahahahahahaha

    Reply
      • And the reason they are playing for the USMNT is because they are not good enough for the the german national team.playing for the youth team is different. Only 30% are good enough to represent Germany on the mens level

      • I take issue with the proclamation that Brooks is “not good enough” for the German team.

He is 20 years old, and starts/plays frequently for a Bundesliga team. I’d say he definitely still had potential to make the German roster at some point, but probably not as quickly as he made the US roster.

I think that’s the same big advantage we have when it comes to Green. He could well decide that he wants to play international football faster than he can break into the German team. That is not to say he isn’t quality enough, just that he has options and is choosing 1B.

      • Brooks is not good enough for the german team .thats a fact. He didn’t even play for any of the germam youth teams. He is a mediocre defender in the Bundesliga. And there are other defenders at the same age in the Bundesliga with a bigger potential then brooks.
If any of those players with dual citizenship have a realistic chance to play for germany they will play for germany.if they dont they will play for the US

      • Oh, so now it isn’t…

“He didn’t even play for any of the germam youth teams.”

        It’s….

“He played 1 game and one game only for the u20”

        Which is it?

      • you came here to be a tr0ll, so stop trying to have a real conversation. you’ve said your piece and it’s impossible for you to be objective on this subject.

      • If the youth team is different, then your entire argument that he’s not playing for the US because he played with the German U-19s falls away. Might want to try applying some logic next time.

      • Obviously u don’t know how this knowledge is laughable. He will learn more in the german U19 U20 U21 then he would ever learn in the USMNT why? Bevause the knowledge and quality of the coaches is 3 levels above the quality of the coaches of the USMNT
Besides if he really wanted to play in the WC for the USMNT this is the time to join the team, this is the time to accept the Invitation ..he didnt. Why would he decline if he really wanted to be part of the USMNT? IT doenst make sense.

      • I guess you don’t think much of klinsmanns coaching abilities. I thought he used to coach the German national team but maybe I am stupid.

      • No I don’t …Klinsmann co-coach was löw and he was the real coach when Klinsmann was the “coach” of the national team . Klinsmann is good motivator. He needs another partner with real knowledge of the game to be effective. He has other strength…and there is reason he failed at bayern..

      • Elias…

you seem to know about international football, I give you that.. but your arguments are skewed and illogical…. you sound like Oboma selling obamacare… change your name to Elies.

      • Didn’t Fabian win a U-20 WC with Germany and still switched? Let’s not forget all of the YOUNG German players Green will have to pass to even make the lineup. I understand he is on the fast track, but limitless playing time (on a US team that isn’t Germany but isn’t too shabby) can get a young man interested quickly, I hope 🙂

      • Thats exactly my point,he was part of the team who won the U21 european championship (not the WC), but that doesn’t mean he is good enough for the mens team. Jerome boateng, hummels, özil, neuer and khedira are the only player of that 2009 U21 team who really made a breakthrough to the mens team. And Fabian is of of those who didn’t. Especially being a midfielder the competition is much harder. Germamy has tons of talented midfielders. And believe me he didn’t choose the USMNT over Germany (why would he?). He chose the USMNT because there were no other options

      • People keep saying this but Germany is horribly short on right and left backs outside of Lahm. There is a reason that Jogi is trying out tons of different ones. Fabian is certainly good enough to challenge Heiko Westermann for a place? Ya, prolly.

      • No he Is not good enough to challenge westermanm or schmelzer or aogo or marcel jansen
And westermanm is not the first choice for that position anyways. The three other players I just named are above him not..I dont what position fabian plays for the USMNT …but he is not a right back nor a left back in hoffenheim.he actually never played that position on club level..

      • And regarding julian green. .he would learn more on the U19 team in germany then he would in the USMNT. Germany has the one of the best if not the best youth system and thats include the club youth system and the national team youth system. The knowledge and quality of the coaches in germany is 3 levels the quality of the USMNT, and believe me julian knows it.

      • The mistake ter Stegen made against usmnt will meber happen to.him again. Its part of the learning process to make mistakes and learn from it. He is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world. Ter stegen is very talented. And he will most likely going for barcelona next season.. so yes the goal keeping coaches count.

    • Why would a sane professional football player choose USMNT over the N11? His dad wants him to play for the US. That seems like reason enough. It might not convince him in the end, but there is plenty of reason.

      Reply
  4. He may be eligible for the US team. However, he is not likely to play here as long as his chances are great in Germany. He seems to be well-liked over there, and he is probably advised to stay in Germany.

  5. When Klinsmann prematurely announced he would be a part of the USMNT training camp ahead of the US Europe friendlies, the German Press went ballistic. There was a swarm of attention from all areas when this was announced, so much so, that JK backpedaled on his announcement to try and take some attention and pressure of him. Green he has indicated his desire to play for the US, but wants to hold off on the switch a little longer, JK has not included him in any plans for Brazil and so he has lots of time. The fact that he was chose again to play in the Germany U19 again has reinforced that fact. Green was born in America, ala Aaron Johansson, and still has family ties here and has announced intentions to play for this country, but Germany will not give up on a great prospect so easily and the latest promotion to the 1st team in a champion League game is just the latest bone thrown into what will be a good dogfight.

    • 1. The German press did not go ballistic after Klinsmann prematurely bragged publicly and announced that he was able to talk Green into the USMNT camp and Klinsmann did not backpedal on his announcement. That was a typical Klinsmann PR stunt. Klinsmann got stood up after Green changed his mind and then Klinsmann quickly made an announcement that he was such as nice guy so with withdrawing the invitation to take pressure of Green.

      2. Green was not promoted to the FC Bayern first team to play in the Champions League in an attempt to throw him a bone to convince him to stay in the German National Team system. Pep Guardiola does not care whether Green plays for the US or for Germany and if Pep chose him for the team then he is no doubt doing it based on merit.

  6. I think he could be the 1st American soccer player to win a Champions league title. Which I personally feel is way more valuable than Germany. Maybe!

    Reply
    • Yeah, certainly the numbers and other professional, no, world-renowned, coaches agree too. That’s why he’s only playing for Bayern and not some super club.

      Reply
    • Would you care to elaborate?

Unlike the rest of these haters who have nothing better do to that to mock, I would actually like to know why you wrote that.

I have never seen him play. However, it seems like he is the real deal.

      Tell us more please.

      Reply
    • I don’t know where to begin with this.

      1) He’s good enough to make the Bayern Munich squad for a Champions League game at 18. That’s why we’re drooling over him- the US has never had a player that young at a club that massive with such a bright future. We don’t want him brought back to MLS. We want him to play for Bayern Munich and for us, developing to his full potential.

      2) There’s no way we should expect, much less demand, that he should change leagues to appease us. We are in the position of wooer- we are the ones who have to attract him away from a team that made the semi finals of the World Cup twice, and are always considered good enough to win.

      3) Playing in MLS to shut up the haters- why on earth would he do that? And what would it solve? Him playing in Germany is not the problem. If anyone hates him, they’ve got issues. For the most part, people are surly at the mention of his name because it is increasingly unlikely that he would choose us over Germany. Hope is not dead, but many are willing to close the book on him as a lost cause.

So, him playing in MLS to make people like him? I think playing for the US and kicking #$$ on the flank would do that.

  7. ‘Green is replacing injured striker Mario Mandzukic and could be handed his Bayern debut by head coach Pep Guardiola despite not playing in a league match yet’

    – outrageous that an American player would ever be used in a sentence like that. Never thought I’d see the day.

    Reply
    • That’s because if he plays in his first game it would be his debut because he has never debuted before.
It’s pretty clear once you read it a few times with an open mind.

      • I think he’s commenting on the fact that Americans are rarely given the benefit of the doubt by European coaches.

      • Pep is probably confused by hearing proper Hochdeutsch after being surrounded by bayerisch people all the time.

        Servus

      • I’m not 100%, but I think he was commenting on the fact that an USMNT-eligible player would be called up to a Champions League roster without having played for the 1st team before.

And not just a Champions League roster.. but Bayern, who at the moment, appear to be the best team on the planet.

        One hell of an accomplishment.

      • Nice achievement by Pelosi, to be sure, but with due respect to Liverpool, today they are nowhere near to Bayern’s level.

  8. He is German. Quit reporting on him. Germany will eventually call him in sometime after the 2014 World Cup and all will be lost of your hopes that he will be in the USMNT.
