The Los Angeles Galaxy look committed to keeping star forward Robbie Keane with the club into the latter half of the decade.

After a season which Keane earned SBI’s league MVP honors with 16 goals and 11 assists, the Republic of Ireland international has reportedly agreed to a new deal with the Galaxy. Keane signed a new contract last January after helping the Galaxy win the title in his first full season in MLS.

“I’ve just verbally agreed a two-year contract, maybe extending to three,” the 33-year-old Keane told Sky Sports while on international duty with the Ireland national team. “I’m certainly excited about that and playing for the Galaxy in the future. I didn’t think I was going to go there and then come back to the Premier League, but I’m enjoying my football there and the club has been very good to me.

“As soon as you hit that 30 age mark in football, people are reluctant to give you contracts but this will be the third contract I’ve signed since I’ve been there and it shows the faith they have in me.”

Since moving to the Galaxy in 2011, the 17-year veteran has taken the league by storm, scoring 41 goals and adding 24 assists in regular season and postseason play combined, winning two titles with the Galaxy. Keane’s side came up short this year with a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference semifinals.

“I’ve still got a good few years left in me,” Keane said.

Keane also stated in the report that he plans on taking some coaching courses back home in Ireland in January, making it likely that he’ll either miss part of Galaxy preseason training or that he’ll be on-loan or train with a club in the UK to return to fitness while away from the club.
