Matt Reis’ status as the starting goalkeeper for the New England Revolution could be in doubt.

The Revolution announced on Monday afternoon that Reis faces five to seven months on the sidelines as he recovers from surgery on his torn left quadriceps tendon. Reis suffered the injury towards the end of the Revolution’s second-leg Eastern Conference semifinals match against Sporting Kansas City, a game that ended in a 3-1 defeat to the Revolution.

It was a tough season for the 38-year-old who missed large portions of the season due to a lingering knee injury and then personal issues due to the health of his father-in-law. In all, Reis played just 14 times in 2013, including the postseason. While Reis was out of the lineup, Bobby Shuttleworth filled in admirably, starting 22 times and keeping nine clean sheets with a record of 7-11-5.

Reis had only returned to the lineup on August 17 in a 2-0 victory at the Chicago Fire. The 16-year MLS veteran went 7-0-4 with five clean sheets during the regular season, setting a new record as the first goalkeeper in MLS history to go undefeated in more than 10 appearances in a season.

What do you think of this news? Do you see Reis returning to his starting role next season? Do you expect the Revolution to try and sign another goalkeeper in the offseason?

  1. I want to Reis back, but between Heaps not liking him & tough surgery to come back from, I wonder. Bobby definitely needs to go. Sign UConn top GK if possible & keep Reis as mentor & backup if he’s willing.
