New England Revolution defender Kevin Alston’s six minute appearance on July 27 at D.C. United looks insignificant in the box score, but in context, it was a remarkable achievement.

Back in April, Alston was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) a rare but treatable form of the disease. Though there is no known cure, Alston stepped away from soccer for four and a half months to undergo treatment, and the substitute appearance at D.C. United was the Indiana University product’s first minutes since the diagnosis.

Alston went on to play four more times in the 2013 season for the Revolution, including the final three regular season games of the year, and was voted MLS Comeback Player of the Year. Alston earned a weighted total of 99.81 when combining the players, media, and club votes. Finishing behind Alston in order was the Philadelphia Union’s Conor Casey, the Seattle Sounders’ Lamar Neagle, and the Portland Timbers’ Donovan Ricketts.

  1. Union fan here who wishes Casey would have won but I realize Alston deserves this award. Keep up the hard work Kevin. His fight and determination should be an inspiration to all of us.
