Americans Abroad: Midweek Rewind

Everton finally snapped a winless run at Old Trafford that went back 21 years, and Tim Howard played a big part in making that happen.

Howard was integral to the Toffees picking up their first road victory against Manchester United since 1992, making six saves and opening the door for Bryan Oviedo’s late winner in Wednesday’s 1-0 win. For Howard, the triumph over his former club gave him two consecutive cleansheets and eight on the season.

On the offensive side of things, Jozy Altidore and Alejandro Bedoya each found the back of the net for their respective clubs. Altidore scored his long-awaited first Premiership goal with Sunderland in a 4-3 loss to Chelsea on Wednesday, and Bedoya helped inspire FC Nantes to a 2-1 comeback victory against Valenciennes on Tuesday with a strong performance that also saw him draw a penalty kick.

Danny Williams was another player to make an impact. Williams, who recently returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, delivered the game-winning assist as Reading knocked off Charlton Athletic, 1-0, on Tuesday. Williams started and played 64 minutes in the match.

Here is how the Americans Abroad fared during the midweek action:

What do you think of Howard and Everton beating United at Old Trafford? Do you see Altidore going on a scoring tear now that he has his first of the season in the Premiership? What are Williams’ chances of making it onto the U.S. Men’s National Team’s World Cup squad next summer?

Did Cody Cropper play for the Saints? Didn’t catch the game but I heard both Boruc and Davies were out injured and he was in line for the start.

    • EspinDOHla

In the euphoria of Jozy’s first goal and the insanity of Suarez’s magnificent day, this fact got lost! Tim Howard had a solid outing that helped Everton at their first win at Old Trafford in 20+ years!!

    • Arkie

would love for him to have a string of those games in Brazil. People remember LD and Beas from that great 02 WC but they forget that Freidel was second only to golden ball winner Olly Kahn that tournament. Maybe 14 can be Timmy’s moment.

      • Matt C

And people forget that Reyna was named to the WC All-tourney team. Great fortitude and a little luck made for a magical tournament.

      • Big Red

Anyone else remember Reyna being named to the WC best XI a little strange? From what I remember, Mastroeni played more games in Reyna’s position because Reyna was hurt and actually looked better than Reyna.

      • Shawn

I don’t remember it being strange. I remember Reyna making an insane 50 yard recovery run that kept the US from falling behind 2 vs Germany.

Everyone seemed to want something different from Reyna than what he was.

Must be one of the best American Abroad reports in a while. So happy for Jozy, dispite the loss, and Howard.

Williams and Ream have both been getting a lot of minutes lately too. Are they both play CM?

    • iggy

Ream has mostly been playing center back for Bolton, though he was on the left recently. maybe a little time earlier this year as defensive mid, but mostly as CB.

      • SilverRey

I didn’t watch the game, but heard that he was playing CM more now w/Bolton.

  • dude

I was all smiles about this weekend until I saw the Fabian Johnson story. He’s a huge part of our possession game.

      • Igor

It kind of is s big deal since he has missed a few games with this injury that won’t go away.

      • bryan

for 3 minutes. lets be real, FJ hasn’t played his usual 90 week in and week out since his injury. hopefully the winter break will give him the rest he needs to be 100%…assuming his lack of PT is injury related.

  • Igor

Saying Bedoya drew the penalty is a bit of a stretch – he made the (nice) pass to Djordjevic, who was fouled for the PK.
