Tim Howard surely did not envision Boxing Day going like this.
Taking on Sunderland in a Premiership fixture, Howard was ejected in the 23rd minute after it appeared that he brought down Ki Sung-Yueng on a clear chance in the penalty area on Thursday. The red card was Howard’s first since playing for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars back in September 2002, and it paved the way for a 1-0 defeat to the Black Cats (Sung-Yueng converted the penalty kick) that ended Everton’s nine-game unbeaten run and marked their first home loss of the campaign.
While the result was a positive for Sunderland in their quest to avoid relegation this season, there was more bad news from an Americans Abroad perspective as Jozy Altidore did not start for the club. Steven Fletcher was chosen to start the match instead of Altidore, and the U.S. Men’s National Team striker played just three minutes as a substitute.
It wasn’t all negative. Duane Holmes had arguably the biggest day of the American bunch, coming off the bench for Huddersfield Town and helping them pick up a 1-1 draw with Derby County. The 19-year-old Holmes entered the game just before the hour-mark and set up an 86th-minute equalizer to end Derby’s seven-match winning streak.
Here is how the Americans Abroad performed on Boxing Day:

What do you think of these performances? Did Howard deserve a red card? Do you see Holmes earning more playing time in the coming weeks?

New American to watch in the Championship; Gboly Ariyibi, 18 yr old winger.
Made his first appearance on the bench today for Leeds
Here’s an article about the kid

Just recently released from Southampton’s academy, which he’d been apart of since he was 10.
Why did Cropper not dress? Why hasn’t Gooch dressed in weeks? A little digging would make these articles more enjoyable.
‘arry is probably resting Gooch for the World Cup, since he already knows he’s going…
Lichaj played 90 minutes in Nottingham’s 2-0 win over QPR. This win puts Nottingham into the playoff places, where QPR also now sit.
I heard he played LB too. I think it would help his chances of going to Brazil if he back up at both fullback positions.
This is very true. It could possibly allow us to play he and Beasley at LB, moving Fabian back to the wing, which is his best position IMO. Hopefully Lichaj gets more games at LB for Nottingham and gets called in to the early year camps by Jurgen.
Don’t forget that Lichaj spent most of his playing time at Aston Villa at LB
This is also true. And he played in game or two in the 2011 Gold Cup as LB and performed quite well. I’d love for him to play the spot for Jurgen, meaning we could actually have two more natural fullbacks and defenders in time for the World Cup in Cameron and Jurgen instead of Evans and Beasley, who performed quite admirably at times.
Cameron and Lichaj I mean.
This is interesting on Duane Holmes’s performance… http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/12040/9089614/championship-mark-robins-predicts-a-great-future-for-duane-holmes
Would be nice to give him a camp look in the near future, not January obvz…
He’s only played a handful of first team matches but we don’t have that many guys in the player pool that age who are playing at Championship (or better) level so he could be on the radar if he keeps it up.
Being a dual national kind of helps that process.
What did Freddy Adu do today?
Praying that a team somewhere will take a flyer on him.
He’s checking to see the Guinness book of world records for how many teams he could sign with and not play much.
but still make a million dollars
He’s got a long way to go before he catches me.
