Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

A week after Mix Diskerud submitted his candidate for goal of the year for Americans Abroad, Jermaine Jones unleashed a nominee of his own on Saturday. Jones scored on a screamer to notch the final goal in a 3-0 win for Schalke over Stuttgart.

Jones ended November on a high note after struggling for much of the month, including a pair of lackluster performances for the U.S. Men’s National Team.

Tim Howard and Everton continued their dominant form at home this weekend. The U.S. goalkeeper made three saves and had little to do as the Toffees dominated Geoff Cameron and Stoke City, 4-0. The match also saw Brek Shea earn his first league minutes this season for Stoke.

Two players trying to fight their way back into the USMNT setup, Eric Lichaj and Danny Williams, both started and went the distance against one another on Friday. Lichaj played 90 minutes for Nottingham Forest and Williams went the full 90 in Reading’s 3-2 victory.

One brief appearance that could have an effect on the U.S. national team was Steve Cherundolo’s cameo in stoppage time for Hannover in their 2-0 win over Frankfurt. It was Cherundolo’s first minutes with the team in over six months.

Here is how the Americans Abroad performed this weekend:

  1. Word is US vs South Korea Feb1st in LA. This would be the match we typically have after camp cupcake. Figured it would be Korea or Japan since their domestic leagues have the same schedule as MLS. Should be a good match up.

    • Lighting what up a match?

It really doesn’t matter if it’s Fletcher or Jozy, Sunderland’s midfield isn’t good enough to create chances in the final third.

      • Agreed. I don’t think Fletcher is a bad player but it seems like Jozy is being frozen out. If you don’t want him because he was Dicanio’s guy, then let him go somewhere that wants him.

      • +1

That really seems like the root of the problem. Jozy is there because of the former coach and now it looks like he is getting frozen out.

I feel for the kid. He is a real talent but being an American and a bit of a head case in regards to his playing as totally set him back.

    • He played well the first half but made too many mistakes in the second, none of which hurt Roma in any serious. His performance was solid but could have been a little sharper, at least from what I saw.

His goal was clearly offsides but there was a clear handball on the play not called that should have resulted in a red card and penalty.

  2. Good to see outsiders like Morales, Shea, Ream and Williams (and Dolo!) getting PT hopefully more to come. Hopefully we dont need them but you never know..

    • I think he’s a case of being too good to go on loan (I.e. almost ready for real playing time) but not good enough to earn it yet. I keep thinking he’s still young; he needs to earn playing time somewhere this season. West Ham are a great team to be at as a youth, but you have to know when it’s time to jump ship.

      • I was mistaken. He’s only 20 and signed a full contract earlier this year. I still think he should find a loan for a couple months. But I thought he was 23 so forget my age comment.

    • It wa nice to see Shea play again. But his performance was just shy of awful. It’ll be a few games before he gets meaningful time again. Please send him out on loan.

Williams is back too, with a great game. Him playing games and putting pressure on Beckerman is good for the USMNT. I think at both their peaks, Williams is by far the better player. He just needs consistency and I think he’ll get that and develop that moving forward.

Also nice to see Dolo earn time. I’m one of the ones that counted him out a few months back. But in this case, I’m happy to eat my words in June if possible.

      • I didn’t see the match but by nature Brek is a hit or miss kind of player. Everyone always judges him on a single performance but that’s not fair. He tries a lot of different stuff. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

      • I disagree, mostly he only tries one thing. muscle and outrun, when it works, it works, when it doesn’t, he looks awful.

      • Nah. He’s a creative and very unpredictable guy. Everyone has said so, even Klinsi. The problem is that his technique isn’t advanced enough to pull of most of the stuff he tries.

      • He’s creative because even he doesn’t know what he’s going to do. Which is a fact. He came out and said he watches games and has no idea how he does what he does – he just does it. Call that low soccer IQ.

      • Do you believe everything Shea says?

He is a pro, signed by an EPL team and , with a bit of luck might go to the 2014 World Cup as a player for the US.

If that proves his soccer IQ is low I can think of a lot of players who would kill to have a similarly low IQ if that is what it took to get him to where he is..

      • “The problem is that his technique isn’t advanced enough to pull of most of the stuff he tries.”

Advanced enough? What does that mean?

He is an attacker. The probability is that the majority of the “stuff he tries” won’t work . But he only needs to get through once or twice a game to be effective.

When Shea is “on” he can be dangerous.

      • For some reason he might be the most divisive player in the US pool. The kind of reaction he gets from some people is just so over the top. However at least Cameron has him draw some attention from what was a pretty awful outing for him as well.

  3. I realize Americans abroad in League 2 aren’t news but Will Packwood’s loan has been extended to 3 months and he has played 5 games – think 90 minutes every game and has been MOM twice. This is really good news considering how serious his broken leg injury was. Just terrific for him.
