Much of the talk since the Seattle Sounders’ season ended has been about whether or not Clint Dempsey will secure an offseason loan, but he is not the only player on the squad that could make a potential move abroad this winter.

West Ham United have identified forward Obafemi Martins as a January loan target, according to a report from the Telegraph. The Hammers are keen on acquiring a forward during the winter transfer window and have added Martins to a list of options that also includes Diego Forlan and Diego Milito.

Martins previously played for current West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, who was in charge of Newcastle United when the Nigerian international scored 35 goals over the course of three years.

The 29-year-old striker could be keen on making a move until the start of the 2014 MLS season in March in order to stay fit and sharp ahead of Nigeria’s World Cup campaign next summer.

Martins scored eight goals and had four assists in 20 matches with Seattle in 2013.

What do you think of West Ham being keen on acquiring Martins on a winter loan? Should Martins make the move? Think he is better off resting and starting the Sounders’ season fresh?

  1. If they are so interested I’d just try to sell him and keep EJ. The injuries and age are catching up on Martins quickly. At least EJ could give you a few more years.

  2. I wouldn’t let him, he is injury prone but once he leaves, he will not come back foe MLS. He reminds me of beckham, a lot of frustrations with the team and COACH and once he gets a taste of the old medicine, he will not come back.
One fun question, if MLS would switch to the international calendar after MLS gets 24 teams, how many players like beckham or ofa would consider MLS. I think there is a long list and MLS needs to move quick and act like a major league.
For instance, whats going to happen once new teams like Orlando, miami , nycfc come in and set a difference with the old school teams like san jose and crew. Of course galaxy, red bull , sounders and some others can compete but by 2020, MLS will be a different story.
will the league have a name new or division 2 but for sure MLS will be a league for the new and not for the old.

  3. If the Sounders want him to be a major part of their squad next year they need to try and block this. He needs an actual offseason to get healthy and gel with the team. Not to go play back in England for a month or two and potentially come back injured

    • I think 2 months is sufficient to let his body heal. He can’t start training until the beginning of the English window which is January 1st.
