Aron Johannsson’s goal-scoring ways continued on Saturday and so too did AZ Alkmaar’s slide in the Eredivisie.

Three days after defeating SC Heerenveen on penalties in a KNVB Cup match in which Johannsson scored twice, AZ Alkmaar saw their winless run in league play extend to six games with a 5-1 defeat to the Super Frisians. Johannsson scored a goal late in the first half to make the scoreline 2-1 and give AZ some hope of a comeback, but Heerenveen responded by netting three consecutive goals to pick up an impressive road victory.

Johannsson’s goal – which came when he chested an aerial ball down and hit a potent half-volley with his right foot after being allowed space – raises his season total in league play to 11. He has 18 across all competitions.

Here is the goal:

  1. Hopefully the USMNT will use him on the left/right wing. He wants a little space and he will not get that at the wc at the traditional cf position. He was shut down against Austria playing in the centre for us.

  3. Actually, AZ was down 3-1 at the break and Heerenveen only scored 2 in the 2nd half (though they could have netted more). The 3rd goal was a really horrible backpass to the GK in traffic.

  4. The Iceman is on a tear. This is great to see. I hope he and Jozy can work on their chemistry and really get things going together with the national team.
