Mönchengladbach eyeing Fabian Johnson

Fabian Johnson could be one of the Americans on the move next summer.

According to a report from German outlet Bild, Borussia Mönchengladbach are eyeing Johnson ahead of a potential free transfer for him during the 2014 summer transfer window. Mönchengladbach’s Lucien Favre reportedly confirmed to Bild the club’s interest in the versatile Johnson, who is drawing interest from several Bundesliga teams and whose contract with Hoffenheim ends at the conclusion of the current campaign.

While Johnson has been a regular starter for Hoffenheim since signing with the club in 2011, a move to Mönchengladbach would seem like a step up for him. Mönchengladbach are currently in third place in the Bundesliga and hold the league’s last automatic UEFA Champions League berth, while Hoffenheim sit in 12th with 18 points from 17 games.

Mönchengladbach finished in eighth place last season and are no strangers to U.S. Men’s National Team players, having formerly employed midfielder Michael Bradley and retired goalkeeper Kasey Keller.

The 26-year-old Johnson has 12 league appearances this season, but has yet to find the back of the net. He scored three goals in Bundesliga play during the 2012-2013 campaign and netted twice in the prior season.

As with the United States, Johnson has been deployed at a number of positions by Hoffenheim. He primarily plays at left back or left midfield but is also capable of chipping in at right back and right midfield.

What do you think of Mönchengladbach’s interest in Johnson? Would you like to see him make the move there? Prefer to see him challenge himself in a different league or stay with Hoffenheim?

For the Nats I’d prefer him in a top 4 league with potential champions league play. And I’m a red bull fan.

No, no, no. Keep him playing against higher competition in Europe. Later in his career, maybe.

Although I could see Fab fitting in fine living in Willamsburg and acting out his inner hipster.

Like I said,…time for an MLS team to step up and bring him in as a DP.

He is 26,…American and versatile. Red Bulls could really use him.

that would be a great move up for him!

BMG should get at least Europa League next year if not Champions League.. the question is will he be playing in front of ter Stegen or will he be in Barcelona?

    • Eric

It sounds like Barca has decided on Thibault Courtois to replace Valdes. Ter Stegen is probably staying.

      • Travis

I wouldn’t go that far, it does sound like Barca has decided on Courtois but Ter Stegen will still be sought after I would think, he is really good

Ter Stegen has stated in the local papers that he is likely to stay with BMG. I just got back from MG (where my company HQ is located).

It would be quite a shock if he pulled a 180.

I am all for this, Johnson goes to a better team and still gets regular playing time and I believe there is a young American on Hoffenheim who would take his spot, somebody help me with the name?

Assuming Fab plays for BMG, this is a great move. Step up to bigger Bundesliga club with Europa or even CL aspirations next year. Sign him up. Fab needs to keep playing up to the WC…his name is pretty much written in pen somewhere on the USMNT starting XI.
