English Premier League leading scorer Luis Suarez and Liverpool’s trip to face manager Jose Mourinho and Chelsea — the Reds’ first meeting with the Blues since Suarez’s infamous bite of Branislav Ivanovic — highlights a big Sunday slate of matches in the English Premier League,

Liverpool slipped from second to fourth place after their Thursday loss at Manchester City, and Brendan Rodgers’ high-scoring squad will face its second straight road test against a fellow title contender at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Chelsea have only dropped points at home once this season in Mourinho’s return to the EPL thanks to a balance offensive attack and the league’s second-best defense in goals allowed.

The day’s action will kick off at Goodison Park and St. James’ Park. Fifth-place Everton will try to overcome their 1-0 loss to last-place Sunderland with a victory against visiting Southampton, who ended their long winless skid on Thursday against Cardiff City. At St. James’ Park, sixth-place Newcastle look to stay hot against an Arsenal side that will be looking to reclaim first place after Manchester City’s victory yesterday.

  1. Finally an enjoyable game involving Chelsea, the second half was less so but I get going slightly more defensive then. I was getting worried they would never play a entertaining game against another big side. Although Liverpool didn’t get robbed as badly as against City I thought they had a very strong PK shout denied when Terry just plowed over Suarez.

      • Agreed. But once again Suarez would throw up his arms waving the reg to give the foul every time. My sense is he might’ve gotten one of those legit calls (IMO) if he’d just get in with it.

  2. These British commentators are by far the most annoying and bias I have ever come across.

There is zero consistency and honesty with their calls and predictions.

It makes me wonder how they have their jobs in the first place.

    • probably since they have a certain amount of foreigners allowed to call the game. 90% must be ENGLISH, so they have a chance to learn and grow and not be outdone by foreigners

      • Case in point: this last free kick for Chelsea.

The commentator said, “An obvious hand ball in the wall.” yet there was ZERO reaction from the players and none of the refs saw anything. If it was so obvious, then at least one of Chelsea’s players would be raising hell.

Or that wrongly called on-sides call on a Chelsea brake-away. The player was CLEARLY offsides yet the commentator said it was “hard to tell”.

        Give me a break!

    • Harkes and Twellman are as confused and annoying as any British commentator. That’s pretty typical. There’s usually a guy calling the game and then a “color” guy who adds some flair to the proceedings. Usually the color guy favors one team over the other. A lot of posters here fawn over the commentary of guys like Ray Hudson who do nothing but yell hyperbole for 90+ minutes.

I would like to see a pairing like Kyle Martino and Brian McBride do a broadcast, MNT or club/CL match. I think that would be a good mix of play by play and color commentary.

    • He did okay at Man Coty, but you’re right. The BPL merry go round of cruddy managers is ridiculous. They are so stupidly cmservative in many ways.

      • But I think the real answer is relegation. In American sports, success = coaching for championships. In English soccer, success = not getting relegated. That’s why it would be hard to hire Jason Kreis or Bruce Arena. If the learning curve is too steep, then your club might drop to the Championship and lose the EPL dollars. Better to rehire Mark Hughes or Sam Allardyce.

    • Very solid so far. But I missed the first 15 minutes. He has stopped a number of attacks by a well timed challenge or “foot in” as the announcers have said a few times.

Anybody know why Huth is not playing? Injury??

      • Thanks man!

A “foot in” do you say? Those crazy English bastards and their strange use of the language. 😉

Can we all just accept it now: Cameron is all class.

    • Interesting. I would guess its more to do with the post Xmas run glut of extra matches and the forced lineup shuffling it induces. Is Huth still out?

  3. Do I watch Cameron or the better matchup? Leaning towards Chelsea Scousers, but TSO always turns these big matchups into boring defensive snoozefests. Tough call.
