Lamar Neagle will be staying close to home for the foreseeable future.

The Seattle Sounders announced on Monday that they have signed Neagle to a contract extension after a season in which he shone for the club. The Tacoma, Wash. native scored eight goals and added four assists in 30 games (27 starts) in 2013, and was one of the most improved players in MLS.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Lamar has a tremendous work capacity and has proven to be a threat in our attack,” said Sounders FC sporting director Chris Henderson in a statement. “Lamar has grown up here in the Pacific Northwest and is a hometown favorite. He is a leader in our community and a great teammate.”

Neagle, 26, is on his third career stint with his local Sounders. He was with the club in 2009 but failed to make an appearance and also in 2011, scoring five goals in nine appearances. Neagle then spent a year with the Montreal Impact before returning to Seattle for what was a career year.

What do you think of Seattle signing Neagle to a contract extension? Smart move? Do you see him getting even better in 2014?

  1. Good for him. You never stop improving. It’ll be interesting to see how Dempsey does this year. Did they overpay for him? I don’t know. But they certainly didn’t need him to fill seats. I wonder how Dempsey, MLS and the Sounders share his Jersey sales and what the numbers were for last season.

  2. I’m no Sounders fan, but I love a guy like Lamar Neagle who doesn’t just fight to earn his place, but far exceeds expectations. If he really earned $48k last year – my goodness, what a deal for Seattle. There’s another guy on that team who earned 100 times that last year and contributed substantially less. Unfair comparison since Dempsey only played part of the season, but the fact remains.
