The World Cup is more than four months away, but the U.S. Men’s National Team is already getting well acquainted with the lay of the land in Brazil, and the latest episode of The SBI Show discusses that training camp and much more.

Episode 106 of The SBI Show discusses the USMNT camp in Sao Paulo, and just what it can do for the squad heading into the World Cup. Co-host Garrett Cleverly and I talk about the benefits of the camp, and just what can genuinely be expected from it.

We also take a closer look at the Andre Lewis saga, as the Vancouver Whitecaps draft pick remains in limbo as MLS and the New York Cosmos sort out his future.  We take a look back at the draft, and also look ahead to Tuesday’s portion of the draft, which will consist of the third and fourth rounds.

  1. Gooch is probably like the 6th CB in the depth chart so I highly doubt he even comes close to making the WC team.

    Brooks > Goodson > < Onyewi

  2. Would Johansson starting in a front 4 with Altidore, Dempsey and Donovan leave us unbalanced defensively? Surely our World Cup opponents will notice the lack of certainty at right back and will attack that position Would a worker such as Zusi or Bedoya be more beneficial to the team to track back on Ronaldo, Lahm, Reus ect..

My 2 cents on the CB debate.. Onyewu is the more talented player with a higher ceiling than Goodson or Orozco. If he can get his feet back under him his experience could be very beneficial. Is it possible that we only bring 3 CBs + Cameron as a utility player if Cherundolo is healthy?

    • the CB debate is interesting. crazy to think that Onyewu could actually be in the conversation. But with Cameron being a RB-CB-CM utility player there is a chance that only 3 true CB’s get picked; Gonzalez, Besler & Goodson probably.

The March friendly is interesting too, just a couple days before MLS opening day does Jurgen pick his MLS players or give guys like Brooks, Ream & Onyewu a shot?

      • The big caveat Ives said was if Onyewu can regain his from from 2007-09! That was five years ago. That’s a lifetime in pro sports! I agree that yes, if he regains that form he can make the team, but after his knee injury, at his age, without consistent playing time, I just can’t see that happening.

      • Not his 2007-2009 form, his more recent Sporting CP-Twente form. Heck, if he could return to 2007-2009 form he would be a lock starter. Don’t see that form returning at this point.

      • The CB debate is an intriguing one. Besler and Gonzo are locks (Cameron is locked also but could wind up in a number of positions) At this point is seems whoever is most in form between Goodson, Orozco, Onyewu, JAB and Ream will get the 1 or 2 spots up for grabs. Klinsmann has his work cut out for him in forming a 23 man roster. Many variables with form/injuries but its a tough puzzle to piece together.

    • Agree w ur CB comments and Ives’s conclusions. With regular 90 min appearances at SWed, Onyewu could regain his form and easily be in line for CB slot 3 or 4. Ives is correct, post knee injury, Onyewu has shown that with regular club minutes (Sporting, Twente) he can still contribute at a high level.

There’s a lot of time between final roster selections in May for anyone to fall in or out if the picture thru form, injury and recovery. I think it’s great that there is still much competition for places and few spots so to speak locked up.

      • He will get his chance with the Owls. They need to start keeping some clean sheets and winning some games. Relagation would put a big hurting on the club. If Gooch can add value, he will get his chance.

    • Tough to say Onyewu has a higher ceiling than Orozco, as Onyewu is much older and Orozco is only starting to grow into his potential. Onyewu has certainly peaked already if he is not on the downside of his career, which the consensus seems to be indicating as though he is vs. his days with Standard Liege. I think you’re right and we only bring 3 CBs with Cameron as a CB/RB/DCM utility. Cherunolo, if healthy, has got to be the choice RB.

      • I meant higher ceiling for the World Cup.
Also, note that Orozco is going to be 28 next month. Not likely to make huge strides at this point in his career.

If Cherundolo can’t make the trip, Cameron has the be the guy at RB (Evans’ and Parkhurst’s limitations are well documented). IF that is the case we have to bring 4 CBs + Cameron IMO. With Cherundolo, we can take a slight gamble with 3 + Cameron and have an extra slot for whoever Klinsmann wants to take along. Could mean someone like Castillo, Kljestan/Beckerman, Boyd/Gomez who might be the last player cut can make the trip.
