Fabian Johnson suffered a broken hand last Saturday but he could be back on the field sooner than expected.

Despite undergoing surgery on the fractured metacarpal in his right hand on Sunday, the Hoffenheim left back was given the all-clear to resume individual training on Wednesday, according to a report in German publication Kicker. The report goes on to say that Johnson is now expected to return to full training on Monday, though he’s ruled out of this Saturday’s game against Hamburg.

The 26-year-old U.S. Men’s National Team left winger was substituted at halftime of last Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Nurnberg after suffering the injury. This season, Johnson has made 13 appearances for Hoffenheim with nine starts.

This news is in contrast to what Hoffenheim sporting director Alexander Rosen told German newspaper BILD on Monday. Rosen told BILD that they were expecting Johnson to be out for an extended break.

Johnson’s contract is up at the end of this season and according to Kicker, Hoffenheim have offered him an extension. Kicker also reports that there is interest in Johnson from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

  1. Beasley at LB is a joke. He went up against inferior talent this past year (as compared to what USMNT will face in world cup) and often times got manhandled, bullied, outskilled by attackers…He is the most glaring weakness in our starting XI

    • I thought we learned the opposite lesson this past year. That FJ (and Castillo and Lichaj and others) couldn’t hack LB as good as Beasley.

      • Completely agree. Beasley had a tremendous year for the Nats. I’d rather see Fabian at LM and keep Beas at LB.

      • Hardly thing we’ve learned anything regarding who is best at LB for the national team. While Beasley has been OK….neither FJ or Lichaj have been given much of a chance. FJ has been used almost exclusively at LM due to the lack of wide midfielders. With Donovan back with the team, Bedoya playing well since the GC, Zusi able to play either side, and the possibility of Shea….we may be able to slide FJ into the defense.
Lichaj has had a total of 15 minutes under Klinsmann at RB. He’s hasn’t been tried at LB since BB was fired. If he continues to get minutes with Forest he should be given at least a call for the March friendly. He’s better than Parkhurst at either outside back position IMO.
Then theirs Chandler….has been used at both RB & LB. With Dolo all but out of the picture he too should be given a call for the March Friendly.
