Round one of the 2014 Liga MX Clausura has come and gone, and not much has changed from the Apertura campaign.

Club America opened a lead at the top of the league table with a dominating 3-0 victory at home in Antonio Mohamed’s club debut, while Queretaro and Toluca each recorded wins as well. Unfortunately for the rest of the league, six games finished in draws, leaving 12 teams deadlocked in the standings on one point. Even Apertura champions Club Leon were held to a 1-1 draw at Atlante.

Using two goals in the first half, Club America raced out to a big lead against a Tigres UANL side that had been up-and-down during the Apertura but were still capable of an upset against the higher-placed opponents. America’s Luis Gabriel Rey started the scoring with a long-range effort in the 10th minute that took a deflection, putting Tigres goalkeeper Enrique Palos off-balance as the ball rolled across the line.

Defender Paul Aguilar finished inside the box in the 30th minute to make it 2-0, and four minutes after the break, Raul Jimenez scored off a rebound from Palos to put the game away at Estadio Azteca.

Here’s a closer look at the rest of the action in Liga MX Round 1:

QUERETARO TOP MORELIA ON THE ROAD

After Morelia defeated Queretaro in the first game of the Apertura season, Queretaro returned the favor back at the start of the Clausura.

Thanks to a 16th minute goal from Miguel Martinez, Queretaro survived on the road at Morelia to earn a valuable three points against one of the league’s best teams. Even more, the Gallos Blancos went down to ten men in the 76th minute as George Corral was shown a second yellow card.

TIJUANA SETTLE FOR GOALLESS DRAW AT ATLAS

While their Apertura encounter featured a hat-trick from Dario Benedetto and six goals in all, the Clausura re-match between Club Tijuana and Atlas was lacking in the goals department.

With two Pelleranos and three Americans in the Xolos starting lineup, Cesar Farias’ debut with the club didn’t go as well as expected, as they continued their poor form in front of goal from the Apertura campaign. Since Antonio Mohamed left the club at the end of the Clausura season in 2013, Club Tijuana have scored only 20 goals, with just five of them coming on the road.

Xolos now will have to re-group with a home match against Club America coming on Friday.

  1. Bad luck for the Xolos to have to face the high-flying Eagles of Cub America next round. May not lead to a good start to the season.
